I'm sooo cynical. What we are reading is Bravo's attempt to fuel the drama and the storyline. Bravo is more concerned about the these things than it is about the skill at hand (fashion design, cooking, etc.).

After watching the last season of Project Runway and now Top Chef #2, I'm more convinced of this than ever. The ramification is that the competitions lack credibility. Kind of pathetic to watch as a result.

I have to agree. One of the reasons I like Top Chef and Project Runway is because (for the most part) they've been immune to a lot of obvious, BS, pandering to the lowest common denominator reality TV crap. PR's definitely gotten some serious cred among top fashion people and TC has too, but if they keep veering into typecasting Marcel into a moustache-twirling bad guy and other blatantly manipulative stuff, they'll lose a lot of the audience that made them so huge in the first place. As well as the respected people in the industry that have been on the shows and supported them.

I guess he is sorta cute... he reminds me of a faun, like the one in Chronicles of Narnia. I could see him playing a flute.

I totally agree that he's been wrongly scapegoated in this competition... as I posted on the Betty thread, I think that ganging up against him has just been a way for the other chefs to bond and feel better about themselves.

I felt really bad for him in the Thanksgiving episode. He did seem to be trying to make nice w/ Betty by helping her, and when she started screaming at him after the judge's table he said, "I thought we were cool" ... this, of course, before she starts ranting at him about his selfishness. I want them to leave him alone! :-(

I'm still not a Marcel fan, but I do feel bad for him. If Betty's deserts turned out to be good, she would have claimed that it was all her, that helpers just did what she would have done.

It's one thing if Marcel put the gingers on top that burned, or responsible for the pie filling texture. But it was all Betty.

Maybe the others are getting on Marcels case because he is a nice and genuinely good person and they don't like that. he is being himself. if he doesn't win because of the sniping I'd be disappointed.

Love him or hate him, he's certainly getting the most attention which should do good things for his career after the show.

I kind of like him. He came on the show with an attitude that was kind of punkish so I think he's deserving of at least some of the flack he gets. But, he's young and will learn how to maintain some edgyness without coming off as arrogant.

The thing about him that I like is that he at least goes for it. He's the opposite of Carlos. Carlos played it safe. Marcel pushes the envelope. He comes closer to hitting than missing so I think he's got great potential and I give him points for his bravery.

The kind of cooking we've seen from this year's crop of contestants is kind of pedestrian. No one is stepping up to "push the envelop" and then hitting the mark. As winning dishes we've had escarot in the shell(more of an appetizer), a refresher drink, 2 kinds of soup, paella which my wife can make, and pizza. None of the above dishes "push the envelop" in my book. Unless Marcel can follow through on his great ideas, who's going to eat what he cooks.
The one thing that is missing from this year's group of cheftestants is leadership. It seems to be every man for his or herself. As Harold's win showed, a top chef has the respect of his staff who in turn want to work for him. I don't see that with this bunch. With regards to Marcel making the finals, who's going to want to work for him (if there are "helpers" or sous chefs like TC1) with the exception of Elia who is just as likely to be one of his competitors?
