Anyone confident in his or her food would be upset about not winning, and I certainly think the confessional is the best venue to express that... if someone wasn't surprised at losing it would make me think he didn't put enough effort into the dish.

OK, after watching tonight's episode (12/13/06) I'm a little more annoyed with Marcel. He was a total sore sport tonight. Don't give people a reason to pick on you!!!!

I think Marcel has been giving the other chefs reasons to pick on him all the way back to showing Ilan his knives. The cameras have been kind to Marcel, even making him a sympathy symbol.

Started out sort of disliking him - then went to supporting him - now back at disliking him.

He should've kept his mouth shut at the judges table. But I can see his point. Exactly what did Sam do on this challenge to deserve a win for his leadership abilities? All he did was let Ilan and Betty give him credit for leading the team. At one point Betty even gave credit to the entire team when the judges seemed to like what they were doing. And she mentioned that she needed to impress the judges during her interview. But then she goes and hands the leadership title to Sam. It's like she gave it to Sam because she knew the team leader would be blamed if they failed.

Anyway, Sam's win seems like a b.s. decision to me, so I don't blame Marcel for pointing that out. I just wish he'd found a bettew way to do it.

I disagree Winston. I think that Sam was absolutely right in the beginning when he said that if you're the team leader and the team does well, you're golden, and if the team does poorly, you're blamed. The leader of the other team took heat for their failures, and rightfully so. A good leader knows when to listen, and also knows when to cut off discussion and make a firm decision. Good leadership shouldn't even be noticed if it's done well.

Chalk me up as another one who turned on Marcel last night. I thought he was getting a bad rap up until this point. But he truth is, there was no single shining star onthe winning team last night. (so as I said above, it was logical to make Sam the winner -- it also would have been logical for Sam to have shared some of the knives with the other three) Marcel threw a hissy fit because he realized that he wasn't going to get all the praise and attention. The fact that when he was throwing his hissy fit, he couldn't cite anything that he'd brought to the table over and above the others illustrates how unwarranted he was. Praise for another person is not an insult to you, and Marcel needs to learn that!

Personally, I was impressed with Sam getting Betty and Marcel to work together. Those two had been at each others throats, but they put that all aside. It was smart of Sam to address that right at the beginning.

As for Marcel... that was completely ridiculous.

Veruka, honestly I think Sam wouldn't have been sent him if his team did flop. But Marcel also should have been more humble, after all he is the one who made the shrimp skewers, and that was one of the least favorites among the judges. I think Marcel is probably feeling what I sort of sense from the show, that is Sam is the golden boy, and even if he serves crappy gray eggs on a bagel, someone else will go home in his place, and most of the time when he's in the top tier, the win will by default go to him. Perhaps Marcel grew impatient.

This is the first time Sam has actually won an elimination challenge.

I just finished reading Andy's blog and Marcel sounds like a snotty spoiled brat -- all he says is that Sam's advice sucked and how Marcel was the greatest of all time --- i felt for him until last night and now i really dislike him
