Is it just me or do the remaining contestants seem unusually nasty? I'm not actually rooting for any of them. I'll probably finish watching the series, but I'm glad it's almost over.

I don't have a favorite either. Zac, Yigit and Morgan are exceptionally talented in this contest. I liked Eric a lot but he was a little outside his league in but must be applauded for making it as far as he did against formally trained pastry chefs. I also found him to be extremely likeable.Originally Posted by swissmiss150;4099475;
Danielle is the funniest thing ever. Her face is made of rubber. Hubby thinks she looks like Olive Oyl and I think she's from the Adams' Family...there's just something cartoon-ish about her and the faces she makes. I think she's a very good pastry chef but not at the level as Zac, Yigit and Morgan.
Yigit has a little too much ego, he's adorable-looking and seems to know it but he's very good. Zac is funny but he does act like a little girl so I don't have a problem with Morgan calling him on it. But that feminine flair does create some masterpieces so he shouldn't care what he's called.
Morgan is probably the best there but he sure can be an jacka**. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those accidents were on purpose, affecting others' work, like Yigit's sugar/glass vase. He's rude, probably cheats and just plain unlikeable but he's darn good.
I don't really care who wins because I don't really like any of them (personality), nor do I think any are outstanding (ability).
What surprised me about the Celebrity Tea Challenge is that none of the chefs were helping each other plate. In all the seasons of Top Chef you have seen the contestants help each other plate so I was shocked/surprised and a bit confused as to why the contestants were not helping each other. Hopefully someone can explain.

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage.
I was surprised at this as well. Even the ones that don't like each other sometimes help plate the food. Is it a different atmosphere they are used to working in and are used to jumping in helping in the kitchen? Or are these contestants so competitive they can't see the forest for the trees? That helping others may get them helped in return? Normally on Top Chef those that have gone before help the next ones.Originally Posted by Bearcata;4099842;
It's just a weird vibe this year with the pastry chefs. I don't really care who wins at all since I don't really like them enough to route for them.
There are definitely changes that need to be made for further seasons to compensate for the fact that they are working in a baking environment that is typically more rigid in what needs to occur than in cooking where they can just throw some seasonings in and it will turn out ok. I think they should be allowed recipes. I understand why they aren't allowed on Top Chef and even agree with it there.

The interest tests they give high school and college kids break professions down by shared interests and values. I can't help but think there is a difference between pastry chefs and savory chefs in this regard. While both are about cooking, the similarity stops there.
There is something inherently different between the two. Maybe it is the design component in pastry cooking that sets them apart from savory chefs....they may be more aking to "artists" in that regard, e.g. painters, sculptures, etc.
Savory chefs, on the other hand, who are also artists but in a different way, seem more about the taste and pleasing people in a very fundamental and satisfying way (i.e. food vs. art).
I love Top Chef. Just Desserts is not Top Chef! Being a chef, a real chef, takes talent. Making so many different flavors taste great is a talent and a skill. However, making sugar taste good is merely baking. If you cantmake sugar taste good get out of the kitchen.
Arts like sugar pulling and cake decorating aside. I find nothing to convince me that a dessert maker should be considered a chef.
I think you have just started a war.Originally Posted by imissme;4100473;

"artists", is that why they are so different? It does take creativity on both sides but I agree with you that they are different.Originally Posted by Jexter;4100429;
btw, just realized in rereading my post in the quote that I didn't spell 'root' correctly. Wonder where my brain was when I wrote 'route'.![]()
Baking is SO much more than just sugar. I love cooking, I love to cook, and feel (and have been told by many others) I am very good at what I do. However, I can't bake to save my life. Baking is so much more exact and honestly, scientific than cooking. Not saying that cooking in it self is not.. but banking you HAVE to be exact or things just do not happen correctly. To say that there is not talent there is not fair, I feel that there is FAR more talent involved with baking.Originally Posted by imissme;4100473;
How many times have you heard someone on one of these types of shows say.. that was just too sweet? Savory or Baking. So it is not JUST about making sugar taste great. Heck, if i think about it, sugar doesnt taste all that great to me.. its pretty lackluster. It just tastes sweet... to enhance that and bring out flavor combos and coax a sweeness out of them.. with or with out sugar.. is an amazing talent. So yes, they ARE Chefs just as much, and in my opinion, more so for what they can do vs a Savory Chef.
