Re: Survivor Gabon: Interview with Corinne – “Crystal’s Gotten Kind of Robbed.”

I really liked getting some inside information on Crystal.

Do I trust Corinne's perceptions this time? Yes. Since there is no benefit to Corinne one way or the other, probably this is an unbiased observation on her part.

I had a real strong feeling they were skewing the edit, and this is just more evidence.

I agree. Boo on editing.

As far as the most inaccurate edit so far? I think Crystal’s gotten kind of robbed. Listen this is a girl that voted me out and I have no hard feelings. This girl was very, very tolerable to live with, very soft spoken. I mean she goes buck wild in her confessionals and sometimes at tribal but in real camp life she never says a word. I mean she speaks just above a whisper in real life and she’s not the racial stereotype that they’re making her out to be. So, I feel sorry for her. It’s bad enough she’s an Olympian that managed to do worse than somebody with no legs at a challenge but on top of that they’ve got her seeming like a crazy woman.
What racial stereotype is she talking about? I've never noticed any racial stereotype Maybe Corrine's the one that's racist. I've hardly noticed Crystal's ethnicity except for this last episode when she was wearing the traditional African clothing and I thought that she looked really beautiful and must have felt proud to wear that given that she is of African descent. Other than that, I've hardly noticed.

It was more in the earlier episodes when she was going off on people...the angry black woman stereotype, the finger wagging, etc. They've done that before on other seasons. Of course if you never wag your finger they can't show it, but if they show every example of her going off on people in a very in your face way, and rarely show her being sweet, and never show the white folks going off on people when they do... you get the angry black woman image. It was definitely noticeable, but until now we didn't know if was a misrepresentation of her or not, and apparently it was. Agree with ManySkills--don't see any reason for Corinne to lie on this one.

Interesting. I still never noticed or thought of Crystal as an "angry black woman". Just a lazy woman who is worthless at challenges and never even really thought about her skin color. Honestly, I don't really notice people's race that much other than just a physical description.

Yeah, you could argue the lazy might be part of a stereotype also, but that stereotype is usually gendered towards males---black women are usually stereotyped as hardworking (not all stereotypes are negative ).

I didn't think of that as stereotyping either. My whole point is that I didn't notice any stereotyping so that's why I said that maybe Corrine is the racist one. She could be one of those racists who pretend not to be. Why would she create a stereotype in her mind and "defend" Crystal if she didn't think of it herself first?

Anyway, I really do not like this woman AT ALL and she is definitely in my top 3 of most hated Survivors. It was always Jonny Fairplay because his name is stupid and I don't like the dead grandma thing. That was pretty low. Then it was James from China (waaaaaaay more hated than JF!) because of his mysogenistic (sp?) attitude towards women and bigoted nasty comments about Christians or anyone with spiritual beliefs. After AS2 I kind of like Fairplay just because he's an entertaining train wreck so it's kind of a toss up between Corrine (who thinks she's better and smarter and more intelligent because she went to college than people like my mother that didn't have the opportunity because of their circumstances. My mother's IQ is way above average and she is the smartest person I know. Just because she didn't have the opportunity to go to college, Corrine would call her stupid. Corrine is the stupid one to actually believe that book smarts are the same or better than being smart at life.) and James. I don't really know which one I hate more. They're both pretty vile

I think the black sterotype that Corrine was talking about was Crystal's attitude and way of expressing it when angered. It was, indeed, typical. Corrine is defending Crystal with this one. She is claiming they showed that to the exclusion of her quiet nature around camp. They are not going to give much face time to quiet, we all know that.

Look, black women, white women, chinese women, latin women, southern women, women from the great white north....all of us can have the temperament to wave a finger and raise a voice when angered. They showed it, she was mad...so what. Doesn't represent her color to me, just her attitude when angry. I am as white as snow, but if that's a racial stereotype...then you'd be calling me a woman of color. I can also be quiet at times, not as interesting for prime time. that's just the way of network tv, not racial!

Intelligence is knowing that everyone has a place in this world and needed to make it run. There are no small meaningless jobs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize you catch more flies with honey. Bob is still there in large part because he wasn't a nasty as Corinne. And how stupid is it to shun people who arn't in your group at the Ponderosa. Game is over and you are going to shun people. All four of them should be ashamed, just ashamed.
