It may be cruel, but it's a little more realistic. When people are stranded/shipwrecked they usually don't have a backpack full of clothes.

True, although depending on the circumstances you could have time to at least grab an extra couple of things.
Perhaps they'll have their packs wash up on shore at a later date

Rather than have them shipwrecked, I wish they would have a gang of pirates storm the ship and make them walk the plank then swim to their islands.

Ah, but pirates are very unpredictable. The producers would have to be on their guard for gratuitous raping and pillaging which could spoil the fun.
When you're ten years old and a car drives by and splashes a puddle of water all over you, it's hard to decide if you should go to school like that or try to go home and change and probably be late. So while he was trying to decide, I drove by and splashed him again. - Jack Handey

For some reason, a socially unacceptable and very politically incorrect reward challenge reward just popped into my head.

They'll must have to get SOME clothes later... it's unconfortable and shocking to stay in some elegant or good looking clothes for 39 days...

If anyone does go in the water with a suit and tie, I certainly hope they're good swimmers. That can't be easy, swimming with wet, heavy clothing.

The whole press conference bait I think was for the realistic part of the marooning. LIke they were shipwrecked and they had to save themselves. And in their panic they jumped off the ship not taking anything but the clothes on their backs.
