If the game is annoy the daylights out of your tribe to get the guaranteed final three, he did an excellent job.

I'll be honest, the only thing I've ever seen him do that was "outwit, outplay, and outlast" was finding the hidden immunity idols several times his first two seasons. But, there, he's still only done one of the three successfully.

He was outwitted by Natalie, who stoked his ego and fell for it. He also was outwitted by Sandra, who just let him play his game and while she too was outspoken gave credit where credit was due (meaning she played the jury's ego by saying she still respected their gameplay, even if subtle). He was outwitted by just about everyone on his team this season - even Ralph initially because he hid the HII from Russell. (I do fault Ralph on revealing it, even though there are two players watching that challenge who will have a tough time making it to jury, one already at RI now).

He also has sabotaged his tribe to the point they lost several challenges in a row, and made him have to scramble for those HII's instead of having a good solid alliance to get to the end where he could pull a Hatch and say that he successfully kept his alliance all the way to the end when they had no choice but to vote on each other (final four).

And he's not outlasted anyone yet because he's not won the game.

In short - he's never played this game to the level of what "Survivor" should be - and yes, I'm including how Hatch played it in season one, which is what Hantz wants to emulate.

And his tribe IMHO only voted him out so early because they didn't want the guy to get to the end and win $100,000 again playing the same game once again. It would show that they were duped knowing full well his gameplay - which he didn't change, and that would make them look bad and him good. No one on that tribe would (rightfully) want that, so they wanted him to prove his prowess and win RI challenges to come back. He fell short.

He did know the game of Survivor, if you don't factor in the social aspect of the game. Russell's problem is he doesn't seem to be able to evolve. As long as he keeps playing the same game and using the same tactics and tricks, he won't be successful.

But this interview is proof of why Russell will never evolve or make any changes. He believes he is the best of the best and it was only the other players ignorance that caused him to be voted out. Or maybe God's intervention on Matt's behalf.
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The only way Russell will ever win this game is if it is only he and his massive ego on the island, and even then I'm not so sure he'd win.
