Survivor: Interview with Sugar - "Blonde and Blind"

First to get the boot this season is Sugar, the pin-up model slash actress from L.A. who was quick to turn on the waterworks in her original season on Gabon. At least this season, she'll probably be remembered for putting on quite a show during the first challenge. Read on to get her take on this season, and if she and Randy are exchanging Christmas cards...

What made you want to come back to Survivor?

Um, well, the fact that they asked me. [laughs] I didn’t think I’d end up doing better than I did before because it was a miracle to get as far as I had in Gabon. But I did actually go into this game trying. I was going to try and win, and that’s probably what messed me up.

Was there anybody you were “starstruck” by?

Starstruck? Yeah, me. I was like, how am I on this season with all of these awesome people? Like Rupert, and...Sugar? [laughing] It’s kinda crazy, I don’t know. I wanted to get to know a lot of people because I didn’t know most of their seasons, so...I went in completely blind. Blonde and blind. [laughs]

I know you weren’t there long, but did you try to form any alliances right off the bat?

Yeah, I was actually trying to get with Rupert and Tom and JT, and we had talked, we had our own conversations that they didn’t show, it didn’t play out that way. They didn’t end up being my heroes, so why would they show that? I was also trying to break up the Micronesian alliance, really hard core, but you never know who you’re talking to - they might have already joined that alliance.

Were the elements as bad as they were in Gabon?

Are you kidding me? It was so much worse. In Gabon it didn’t really rain, it drizzled a little bit. This is not like China, or the other...I can’t remember, it was really, really rainy a couple of seasons. And I remember thinking, God, at least Gabon wasn’t like that, you know? So, Samoa is very very wet.

Is there anybody on the Villians tribe you would have liked to work with? Randy is probably not your answer...

Surprisingly, I would have loved to work with Randy! I would have liked to team up with Randy. I like Randy! And I would have liked to team up with Jerri and Coach, and maybe Russell.

During last night’s episode, Colby talked about how you kept everyone up and followed him around. What was really going on with that?

Did he say that I followed him around? That’s funny, because that’s completely...I did try to bust a move on him and talk to him a little bit, but I had the hots for JT at the time. So it’s kinda funny that they played it that way. But that’s okay because Jerri already went through it, so basically I’m Jerri number two, and now people are questioning Colby, so....[laughs]

What were you thinking when you got your top ripped off in the challenge?

Um, thanks, Sandra! [laugh] I scored a point and apparently got some airtime without having to break anything.

So you didn’t care? It didn’t look like you tried to cover yourself or anything.

No, there was one split second where she was undoing it, and I said “Don’t undo my bra, bitch!” So I go, well she’s not expecting me to just lose it, so I rolled with it and took the opportunity.

Do you think your emotional state contributed to your boot?

Yeah, I think if I hadn’t cried after we all lost the second challenge...that was not really my fault either, but anyway. I should not have cried, because then it was like, oh, okay, well she already thinks she’s going home. I don’t know how to scramble, I don’t like scrambling.

Fair enough. What was Rupert like around camp after he broke his toe, and couldn’t make fire?

He tried to not let anyone see how much pain he was in, but...he was nice. I like Rupert. He’s a nice guy.

Could you tell he was in pain?

Oh yeah, I could. I think we all could tell. James cut himself, too, the second day, and I was like, ooo, you better keep an eye on that. And he was like, don’t tell anybody!

How did it feel to bring home a win in the reward challenge, and then get voted off?

Well I was hoping that by proving how (far) I was willing to go for my team to win, that that would have played a part in it. But I was so miserable after three days of being out there, I mean, I know this sounds bad - I still feel like the luckiest Survivor ever being voted out first this season! Because it was so cutthroat and hardcore and the elements were so much worse than Gabon.

Did you ever think to yourself “What the hell am I doing here? Am I nuts?”

Yes, several times. Pretty much the second we got there! [laughs]

Was this Survivor harder for you because you knew what to expect?

No, it’s harder because you never know what to expect. It’s so much harder because they’re all strong players, and they’ve seen the game played every which way, and if you’re not into conniving and figuring out your moves beforehand, then you’re really not playing Survivor, I guess. [laughing]

Are there any other past Survivors you would have liked to see on this season?

Um, Johnny, and I guess Richard Hatch. I’m sure that’s what everybody would have liked to see - oh, you know who I’d really have liked to see? Todd Herzog.

Who would you like to see win the game?

    Um, Tom.

    Any particular reason?

Yeah, I have a daddy crush. [laughs]

What did you think of Tom catching all those chickens right away?

I think those might have been a gift from the CBS gods, because how in the heck would there be a rooster and three chickens just happen to be in our camp? I don’t know. And they gave us our net already, so we had that when they walked up. It was within two days. Sometimes you don’t know. I thought it was a little easy, that’s what I thought.

What do you think of Russell?

In real life or in the game?

    Both.

In the game, I think he’s psychic. I guess he can have a big head about himself, because he is one the best players ever. In real life, I don’t know. I don’t know if people are lying. I would just hope that people who would tell me stuff, as crazy as it is, would be only lying to me in the anybody, not outside the game.

Is there anything you would have liked to do differently?

I would have tried not to cry after we lost the challenge. And I would have not talked all night - although Rupert was talking a lot too! - but it definitely looks like I was talking more, and...yeah, I probably would have done everything differently, actually. Except for I still would have rolled out of my bra and gotten that point!

What did you think of the whole “Heroes vs. Villains” theme?

I thought, it’s a great concept, but all these heroes weren’t heroes and all the villains weren’t villains, everybody is both. Nobody is all good or all bad. It kinda made me feel bad being called that, a hero. It was a lot to live up to, and I didn’t feel like a hero.

Were you surprised by anybody’s placement on the teams?

Uh, no, because I don’t know their seasons that well. I’m sure CBS has their reasons for putting people in that category, or whatever. I don’t know...sorry, this is a really tough answer!

Were you surprised at JT appearing to be one that was leading the others to vote you out?

Did it appear that way? I thought it appeared that Colby was. But yeah, JT...did they show that?

    Yeah, they did, kind of.

Okay, cool. I was watching it at a club with a bunch of friends so there were parts that I missed. No, that didn’t surprise me. I’m surprised they even showed any of that, actually, because of the way they were playing it.

So what happened at the immunity challenge with the puzzle?

It was kinda like a trick question...it looked obvious that the one piece was supposed to be the bottom, but it was actually the top and the other team just figured it out quicker, and nobody was saying this or that, you know, nobody had any bright ideas. Actually, I remember, and I don’t know if they played it, but Rupert did say at one point, something like that. And I said no, it can’t be, and...I have no idea what I saw last night, because I was drinking and with friends, so...[laughs] So if they did show me messing it up, I do remember after the thing going “Oh, Rupert, you probably did have it right!” But he didn’t do it, you know, he didn’t make us do it.

From what we saw, you appeared to be a little disinterested in the puzzle for a while.

Oh, you know, I don’t even know how they showed me interested in the puzzle because respond the time I was looking around on the ground for whatever piece we must have dropped, and I didn’t want to be the jerk that had a piece missing, that’s why we couldn’t figure it out. So a lot of times, I was like, looking around under people’s feet and in the bag, you know.

Do you think you were hurt by not having anyone from your season on your tribe?

Yes, of course it would have been better to have somebody I’ve played with, even if Randy had been on my tribe, which would have been impossible. But if he had been on my tribe, that would have been better, because at least he and I would have tried. I don’t hate Randy and he doesn’t hate me, and I think if we’d merged together we would have joined up.

I had the opportunity to interview Randy last month, and asked him how he felt about seeing you on the island. He said he wished you had been tragically killed in a plane crash - how do you respond to that?

[laughing] Randy probably has a bunch of one-liners that he pulls out of his pocket when he’s playing Randy. He actually IS Randy, but he doesn’t really mean anything that he says half the time.

So do you two talk outside of the game?

No, we’re not like, chummy, but we talk about events and, you know...we don’t hate each other. He thinks it’s funny to be mean all the time.

Since none of you knew Russell, was there any kind of talk about what kind of player he might be?

I don’t remember us talking too much about it, but I know we probably mentioned it around the fire, he must have done something (to get on the show). He obviously wasn’t out too soon, or they wouldn’t have had him back because he had to show his character somehow. He did something serious. But we had no idea that he was picking up, you know, psychic maps in his head to idols that they didn’t even know were out! [laughs] We had no idea.

Did you think you still had a shot going into Tribal Council, or did you think your fate was sealed?

Like, a snowball’s shot in hell. [laughs] I was pretty sure I was done.

    Great interview!

I always feel like the contestants SAY they knew they were going, but really didn't, just to make it look like they weren't blindsided.

Wow, you got that up quick, Way.

Loved her thinking Randy is mean because he thinks its funny. Yeah, I know I laugh when someone tells me they wish I had died tragically in a plane crash.

Come on, there's no way she didn't know she was going.

I don't know. She just came into the game so confident that she had so many alliances already made. Granted, she probably started to feel differently when she realized she didn't really fit in with her tribe (see video extras), but I feel like she would have tried harder if she knew she was on the outs.

Re: Survivor: Interview with Sugar - "Blonde and Blind"

Sugar didn't seem overly shocked last night. So in this case, I think she had some idea. She probably wasn't stupid about the alliances and deal making going on. Quite honestly, I always think you're idiotic if you think you're 100% safe, unless you have immunity (and don't give it away). Anything can happen, and while you're making a deal with one person, they're making a deal with another. Sugar didn't seem to really care about fitting in this time around

I wonder if it was more she didn't have any pre-made alliance that got her ousted over them thinking she was the weak link. I don't feel like, aside from her crying, she showed any signs of weakness.

    Great interview!

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you meant just before the vote.

Excellent interview! I'm glad Sugar was the one to go home (I was worried they might target Rupert with his broken toe), but I have to admit that her scoring that point and then spinning around topless to give Sandra the double-bird salute was one of the best moments of Survivor ever.
