So, we lost. But that is a good thing? Sheesh, this is not like football, baseball, or basketball! I'm confused, even when DH tries to explain. 'Cause he doesn't understand either. But, Go USA!

It's called a Round Robin Tournament. See if there's an online description that works for you.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

Thanks Uncle David, I found a good explanation of round robins, and then this specifically about World Cup 2014: **In the knockout stage there will be four rounds (round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final), with each eliminating the losers. The two semi-final losers will compete in a third place play-off.**

The way I understand our advancing on a loss is that overall, we had more goals than another team who had a better win/loss record. I think.

We had the same win/loss record as Portugal and scored as many goals against our opponents, but they had more points scored against them. This gave us the better record and we advanced.

Now the US has to win the next one, I think they will

It was a dramatic, valiant effort by USA team in extra time, but no cigar.

It was fun to watch! The goalie did an AMAZING job, and how great for that 19 year old to score!!

ETA: I was slightly irked by the woman anchor on our local morning news show. She said something like "Oh well, it's all over now." She made it sound like we can't possibly watch the rest now that the US is out of the running...
