They first announced 4 minutes. We would have won!

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

    Re: World Cup 2014

I watched the US v. Portugal game. The first entire World Cup game I have ever watched. I was watching about 15 minutes behind the live broadcast. About 15 minutes or so before the end of the game my phone vibrated and I picked it up thinking my husband had replied to the text I sent. Instead it was a banner from NPR announcing the results of the game. Grrrrr. Needless to say, I have now disabled all alerts from NPR.

Can someone please explain to me why they added the five minutes? I'm sure they said during the broadcast, but I apparently missed that detail. It seemed so arbitrary when I had just heard the announcer talking about how they had added four minutes, but then a moment later correcting to say it was five...

As you watch the game you will notice that the game clock never stops. Yet, there are occasions during the game the referees do not consider part of the game play. In American football we would have a timeout and the clock would stop. In soccer, the referees keep track of the amount of non-game play and add it to the end of the game.

Thanks Unc! Every time I look at the game clock I find myself disoriented by the fact that the time keeps growing!!

As Uncle David said, soccer has a continuously running clock. During the course of the match, the center ref will keep track of events such as injuries, injury treatment, substitutions or plain old time-wasting, where play has been stopped during the match, and then add that "stoppage time" to the end. Near the end of the 90-minute regulation time, the fourth official on the sideline will hold up a lighted sign indicating the number of minutes of stoppage time to be played. The announcer last night (the great Ian Darke) may have just initially misread or was told the wrong number of minutes.

Stoppage time is a welcome blessing when your team is down, and a positive curse when your team is leading!! Drat and Double Drat that last night it was 5 minutes!

Yeah! What's the matter with these people? They should watch real football and get a clue!

Yup. All that stopping means lots of commercial breaks and lots of advertising moolah.

Congratulations Team USA! It was quite an accomplishment just getting out of the Death Group.

    Re: World Cup 2014

So we're now part of the last 16. How many rounds (8, then 4, then 2, then the winner...?) Or is it more collapsed than that? I don't understand how the groupings work and I'm surprised there would be that much hype going into this game to still only be at 16. My company brought in pizza and allowed us to watch part of the game. Is that expected for each successive game, or is it just luck that the game happened during the workday? Sheesh, it was like the last game of the World Series.
