    Re: Hockey 2009 - 2010

So, Hall went first in the draft. Didn't surprise me, I think he had a slight edge over Seguin.

I post once in a while at a hockey message board. The New York Rangers thread when they selected McIlwrath in the first round was hilarious.
I feel their pain, but it was funny to read.
That was an odd choice by Sather.

Anaheim made out like bandits in the first round.
Teams seem to stick by their choices even when their are trades that change the order of the picks.
Anaheim managed to get Cam Fowler at 12 and Emerson Etem at 29, both were predicted to go higher.
Fowler was predicted by every site that I read to go as high as top 5.

Thanks for the update Fluff. I didn't watch it, and have been hearing bits and pieces. I need to get updated on everyone's picks!

fluff! Thanks! That's fantastic. Nice to see Mark Visentin #27, he played for our local Niagara Ice Dogs! How ironic he's been drafted by Pheonix, he's from Hamilton, same place the Coyotes would have played if Gary Bettman wasn't the biggest idiot around!

Well, Don Cherry shouldn't be too too upset at the number of carveyourkneesoff! He goes ballistic when there are too many players from Europe. During one of his rants a few years back, there was a European player who smashed into another player with their knee, ouch. He called him carveyourkneesoff!

I'll have to google each one of those players, because it won't be long before I see them on the ice!

Free agency today and the biggest headscratcher was Jokinen to Calgary 2 years $3m per.
On paper not necessarily a bad acquisition at that price, but they just traded him a few months back. He didn't work out there. They got rid of Lombardi to get Jokinen, got rid of Jokinen to get Kotalik put Kotalik on waivers and signed Jokinen as a UFA.
I have no idea what Sutter's thinking is on this one.

Very cool that a local boy got drafted in the first round, GA.
They only did the first round on the first day of the draft.
I felt bad for the kids who were predicted to go in the first round, didn't, then had to come back the next day.

Oh goodness, I always feel so bad for the ones expected to go in the first round and don't.

I'm listening right now to the sports news, 5 forwards gone from Chicago?? This is what the salary cap does. Stanley Cup Champions, have now lost 5 players???

n 75 games for Calgary, Jokinen collected 19 goals and 50 points.
Somethings fishy, why would they do that??

I haven't had a chance to click on your link yet, GA, but I did read at another site that Sutter apparently called Jokinen and told him he was wrong to trade him in the first place.
He was probably wrong to trade him for the return he got, but I don't think Jokinen's stock was too high when that trade was made.
    Neither was Kotalik's.

Fifty points in 75 games isn't a bad return, but he just never seemed to fit there.
    Sutter also re-signed Tanguay.
They didn't get a pick in this draft until the third round I believe this season, missing out on soime great players.
Calgary fans don't apear to be too happy.

Forgot to add, I was pulling for Chicago to win the Stanley Cup this season because it was so obvious they'd have to make major changes to their squad this year to stay under the cap.
I believe Toews was only making $900,000 last season.
A lot of people would love to make that of course, but it's a fraction of what he'll be able to command now. I think Kane was in a similar situation.
It was great to see them win knowing that a number of them would not be there for the start of the next season.

$900,000 is pocket change to a baseball player! Salary Cap is the reason Halak was traded by the Canadiens. He was earning $800,000. The playoff hero of this season, gone! I don't know how much he is getting with St Louis, I'm not sure that has been decided yet, but it will be more than $800,000!

No kiddin' It will be to Toews when he signs his next contract too.
It wouldn't surprise me if he gets as much as ten times that a season.
Still not top baseball money, but not bad for a 22 year old

22 yrs old, Stanley Cup Champion, the youngest Team Captain and a member of the Triple Gold. Winter Olympics, World Juniors and Worlds. What an accomplishment at such a young age.

I wonder what it feels like knowing you are going to be earning approx 10x your salary?
