Re: College Football 2009

Well good one from the Gator's perspective. But exciting game? Nah, it was all I could do to keep my eyes open through the 4th quarter. With all the hype leading up to this game, I expected more.

Re: College Football 2009

Didn't get to see any of the PSU game yesterday. I wasn't home and even if I had been, it wasn't being broadcast in my area. According to my local paper, the Nittany Lions scored 28 points in the last 7 1/2 minutes and there was a fumble recovered and run 91 yards for a touchdown.

Sounds like I missed a good one!

LSU game was a yawnfest. That was supposed to be the game that "tested" us this year. Couldn't have been a more boring game. I struggled to stay awake during the 4th quarter.

I agree, myrosiedog. What a disappointment that game was! As a big LSU fan, I was hoping it would be a good barn-burner, but it was anything but. As a friend of mine said on her Fbook page, the LSU quarterback was playing like he was the one with the concussion...

Re: College Football 2009

I'm right there with y'all on the LSU/FL game. It was supposed to be such a big deal, but by the 3rd quarter, I started watching Community on Hulu. I'm not a huge LSU fan, but the hype had me tuning in, and it was very disappointing. Nothing like the LSU/FL game 2 years ago, for certain. It was cool seeing the glow from the stadium miles away though. I drove home from dinner during half-time and the lights were so bright and the cloud deck so low, it was a magnificent glow.

This doesn't look good for Florida State. I hear the team isn't really upset since they don't know about it. No one on the squad could read the report.

FSU releases NCAA transcripts: Some 'Noles reading on 2nd-grade level?

By Matt Hinton

After months of appeals, wrangling over public records laws and the usual backbiting between the university and the NCAA, an appellate court finally gave Florida State the go-ahead Wednesday to release a 695-page transcript of its Oct. 18, 2008 hearing before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, testimony from which was used to smack multiple sports at FSU in March with probation, minor scholarship restrictions and -- most notably in light of Bobby Bowden's quixotic pursuit of the career wins record -- vacated wins for playing ineligible players later accused of cheating in an online course ("Musical Cultures of the World") in 2006 and 2007. The transcript didn't tell us a whole lot we didn't already know. (Although it is, like, 700 pages long, so a few people are still reading.)

The news is probably more notable for public records scholars -- the NCAA infractions process is a notoriously secretive ordeal, and it fought tooth-and-nail to keep it that way -- than football fans, but the released documents did shed some light on a few specific details of the Florida State's violations, and of the school's subsequent investigation and defense, most of it painting "an unflattering portrait of Florida State’s professors and administrators," according to the New York Times. But certainly not nearly as unflattering as the portrait it painted of some of FSU's players, academically speaking, or the stops pulled out on their behalf by (to use FSU president T.K. Wetherell's term) a "rogue tutor":

Brenda Monk, a learning specialist hired to work with athletes who had learning and physical disabilities, was accused of improperly helping students type, edit and write their papers. Monk, who testified that some of those athletes had a second-grade reading level, was accused of committing academic fraud. In one case, she was said to have let students use a study guide that had answers to exam questions for an online music course.

Monk has left the university and filed a defamation suit against Florida State.

In their defense, second-graders are very advanced these days, what with the Baby Einstein and secret genetic engineering programs Congress slipped into an appropriations bill; some of the contemporary seven-year-old's favorite television shows also captivate the Miami Hurricanes. (And vicious, highly educated commenters, please, consider how the unusually high clusters of "criminal justice" and "recreational administration" majors on your own squad might fare by the same standard before you hit that spittle-flecked 'return' key.)

We can still assume that every Seminole at least knows how to count to 14, which remains the relevant number: As it stands, FSU still has to wipe 14 victories from Bowden's career total, a fate that may actually be looking more and more attractive to him -- if you remove those wins from the 2006-07 seasons, the unfolding disaster in 2009 suddenly looks like an improvement.

Re: College Football 2009

No tailgating at PSU's homecoming game against Minnesota.

The reason: snow

Approximately 20,000 parking spaces will be unavailable. Even if they plowed now, the snow is expected to fall thru the night.

Too bad they aren't playing USC or FSU. I'm pretty sure the Gophers are used to playing in the white stuff.

I am NOT surprised. Bowden has bent and broken the rules for YEARS for his players. They have earned the nickname Criminoles in Florida because of all the jail time that some of them got a few years ago. There have been recruiting violations, academic violations, you name it. He's the most crooked coach in college football today. I hope they do wipe the wins off for those seasons. He can't keep breaking the rules and getting away with it.

Yeah, that LSU game was pitiful. Lobeck, your friends statement was funny and true and what was it with all the offsides penalties that LSU got? I don't think I've ever seen that many offsides and false start penalties against one team in a game before. I know they were eager, but it lost them a lot of yardage.

I'm just hoping today's game against Arkansas is better. I have to work, so am Tivo-ing Tebow as it starts at 3:30 and I won't get home until 5:30.

Re: College Football 2009

Here is the article that you are referring to:

Quote:
Weather prevents tents, tailgating; grass parking lots closed
Friday, October 16, 2009

Due to the volume of snow already on the ground at University Park, combined with the forecast of potentially significant snowfall tonight (Oct. 16), all grass lots have been closed for Saturday's football game against Minnesota. Only paved lots will be open for parking, and there will be no tents or tailgating permitted in any of the lots. Those bringing RVs to the game may be redirected to other locations for parking.

Roughly 20,000 parking spaces are being lost because of the weather conditions. Football fans are being urged to carpool, and those who can walk to the stadium – particularly students – should do so.

The grass lots are closed mainly for safety reasons. The ground is not yet frozen, and the amount of slushy snow that has fallen has turned the lots muddy under the snow. There already is close to a half-foot of snow on these lots, with up to an additional half foot or so being forecast for overnight, making the lots impassable and treacherous to motor vehicle traffic.

All ADA parking will be located in the East Parking Deck on Bigler Road. This parking deck will be open only to those with ADA parking permits, and it will be serviced by the ADA shuttle.

Penn State is working to partner with area businesses to have football patrons park in their lots and be shuttled to Beaver Stadium.

More information about specific traffic and parking plans can be found at Penn State Live online.

Conditions inside the stadium also will be less than ideal. With additional snow forecast overnight, seats and walkways will be snow-covered and slippery. Fans should arrive at the stadium with the expectation that not all snow will be cleared off of the bleachers. Snow will be removed throughout the night from walkways and aisles in front of seats, but fans should expect those areas to remain very wet throughout the game. Those attending the game should dress warmly, with a waterproof outer layer of clothing, and wear warm footwear with good traction.

The Homecoming Parade will be held as scheduled.

The Bryce Jordan Center will be open at 11 a.m., with the men's basketball Blue White Hoops Fest kicking off several activities that culminate with the Tailgreat show.
Penn State Live - Weather prevents tents, tailgating; grass parking lots closed

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time. If the people who have close, expensive parking spots don't get to their spot by 11am, it's a free for all. Anyone can park there. And no tailgating? Are you kidding me?
