| Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China Anyone read how Speedo will give Phelps a one million dollar bonus if he matches Spitz's number of gold medals? Wondering if he gets extra if he gets 8.

| Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China I believe the million dollar bonus from Speedo is for 8 golds this year. At Athens, Speedo was offering a million bucks bonus if he tied Spitz's record. I read about that in Sports Illustrated--Speedo and Phelps team worked that out so that he would get some publicity and stand out at the Olympics. I'm pretty sure he would've stood out even without that... ![]() |

| Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China ^ According to this article (Michael Phelps wins gold despite goggles fiasco - Times Online) they offered the same bonus this year as they did in Athens; in another article I read it also mentioned that if he tied Spitz's record he would get the bonus. Mind you, what's the difference between 7 or 8 golds at this rate? ![]()

| Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China I hope he wins all the golds and can relax a little. Supposedly he won't be training again until Feb. so maybe he can take a vacation with his girlfriend and just have fun. He's said he wants to compete in the next Olympics in London as well. At this point, he's saying that he wants to try a few different races and it seems like that Olympics will be less about winning a certain number of gold medals...although as competitive as he is, who knows?I do think he's at his peak now. At 27, I think he might be too "old" to compete at the same level as he is now and in so many races. When's his last race? This Sunday? Or tomorrow? |
