Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China

Well, tonight all the commentators mentioned more than once that the judging was biased... in fact one of them said in reference to one athlete's score (China) "that's wrong" and later "that's way too high." I wish that there was some recourse for Russia and Romania because that is just not fair.
What on earth is going on here... even little ol' me... non-gymnast and mere spectator..can see the discrepancies in the judging. Despite the outcome, I believe this should be looked into to prevent further problems...someone should let these judges know that they can't give/deduct points because they feel like it...especially when two people do similar routines with similar deductions and someone comes out points higher (do they think we are deaf and blind?). I am really shocked and I believe this only lends to the controversy surrounding the gymnastic portion of these olympics. What do you guys think? Anyone else notice this?

Yes I noticed it as well and if one of those Chinese girls had won the gold because of it, I'm sure there would have been an uproar. I'm not sure anything will be done about it but I'd like to know what was going on as the scores were clearly biased.
Congratulations to Nastia and Shawn on their wins.

Man, I worked the nights of the individual men's and women's gymnastics and missed both. What else happened last night? I wanted to tivo it, but my family has had enough of the Olympics and didn't record it for me last night.

I nearly choked when Daggett while watching the chinese Gymnast on the uneven bars " I like how she seems so light and airy like a kid in a park having fun" Tim, it feels that way because she is a child and not a teen.

Have to agree!....DAH!...she is a kid, and if a few of those girls are actually 16 then I am still 25!....

Reminds me of the controversary surrounding judging of ice skating as well. I think that anytime you have a sport that is left to the discression of personal opinon (judges)...then you will have a major difference in opinions....even though they should be UNBIASED as judges t here is still a "style" quality that is reflected in that scoring.

Having curves doesn't necessarily equal maturity. I know a lot of people who were (and some still are) stick-thin (no curves) when they were teenagers.

Haven't watched the gymnastics all-around yet but looking forward to it. Sounds like it was a good competition. I did watch swimming last night - was very happy at Ryan Lochte winning gold in the backstroke and then coming back half an hour later to win bronze in the medley.

I stayed up until 1:30 last night (or should I say this morning) watching the swimming and gymnastics. Wow to our swimmers! Wow to Nastia and Shawn! I wonder if those people who were touting Shawn as the next gold medalist are eating anything avian today! Nastia reminded me of those russian gymnasts of the "old days"-full of grace.

I was glad to see both go 1-2...and yes Nastia is graceful, Shawn powerful...great that two different "styles" were able to finish 1-2.....

P.S. I think she gets her graceful poise from her parents...it is the Russian influence in her gymnastics that makes her pleasing to watch!

Re: Summer Olympics: Beijing, China

I wish I could find a better picture, but this is the poster that we all had up in our dorm rooms after the '72 Olympics. The real posters were in color though.

Back then, we all thought Mark Spitz was smokin' hot, too bad he turned out to be such an arrogant jerk. I remember it well though, he won his 7th gold medal on my 18th birthday, and the very next day was the terrorist attack on the Israeli athletes. Anyway, enough of my trip down memory lane.

I was thrilled for Nastia and Shawn for finishing 1-2 in the all-around, and Rebecca Suni for winning the swimming gold last night. And of course, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
