Panthers draw top pick at 2003 Entry Draft

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The Florida Panthers are enjoying a rare winning streak. For the second straight year they finished first in the NHL draft lottery.

The Panthers, who would have picked fourth based on their regular-season record, should've had just a 10.7 percent chance of coming away with the top pick in Monday's lottery.

    Draft order

The remaining first-round positions will be determined after the playoffs:
    1. Florida Panthers
    2. Carolina Hurricanes
    3. Pittsburgh Penguins
    4. Columbus Blue Jackets
    5. Buffalo Sabres
    6. San Jose Sharks
    7. Nashville Predators
    8. Atlanta Thrashers
    9. Calgary Flames
    10. Montreal Canadiens
    11. Philadelphia Flyers (from Phoenix)
    12. New York Rangers
    13. Los Angeles Kings
    14. Chicago Blackhawks

But because of a draft-day deal with Columbus last year, the Panthers had the right to trade first-round picks with the Blue Jackets and ensure a greater lottery chance.

It worked, as Florida had a 24.9 percent chance to win, the combined total of both teams' percentages. The Panthers jumped up three spots, past Columbus, Pittsburgh and Carolina, which finished with a league-low 61 points.

Only the teams with the five worst records had an opportunity to win the first choice. A team is not eligible to move up more than four places. The lottery determines the selection order for the 14 teams that missed the playoffs.

Last year, the Panthers traded the No. 1 selection to Columbus, which chose forward Rick Nash. Florida picked defenseman Jay Bouwmeester with the third choice they received from the Blue Jackets.

Carolina, which went from the Stanley Cup finals a year ago to having the NHL's worst record, had a 25 percent chance to get the top pick. They will instead choose second, followed by Pittsburgh and Columbus.

Buffalo will pick fifth, followed by San Jose, Nashville, Atlanta, Calgary, Montreal, Philadelphia -- which owns Phoenix's pick -- the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Pittsburgh is going to need that pick to replace Mario. I don't even think he's going to be in the owners box.
Hey Bill - You might finally get the Portland Penguins, although they've been stripped pretty clean of talent.

A skinny French goalie will replace Mario? Or do you mean their pick. Well I'll be pulling for Fleury to go somewhere like San Jose or a place with a promise of not sucking so much.

Yeah Eny, I think that if Mario bails on the Pengs, then we will finally get our team. All the more reason not to move.

However, Pittsburgh has been a good hockey town, so I think they may well try to get a local ownership group again. Seems like there has to be a way to make it work economically.

I expect Allen to make a move though. He is losing luxury box occupants at the Rose Garden due to the general embarrassment that is the TrailGangsters, and he needs a new draw. He owns that Garden outright.

Dont you have a WHL team?

Mario will go to management, not play, and he wont sell the Pens. Are you kidding me?

also whoever suggested Mario should play for NYR *coughCherrycough* can go blow it out your ass because if Mario were to sell and play elsewhere hed have more sense than to play for the talent-sucking rangers.
