Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro was euthanized this morning, co-owner Roy Jackson has told the Associated Press.
The Thoroughbred Times says the decision was made after consultation with Dean Richardson, chief surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school.
"There was not a foot that was not affected," Gretchen Jackson, wife of Roy Jackson, told The Thoroughbred Times. "He just would not lie down. He had not layed down for two days now. That can't be good for him. He's got to get the weight off of his feet."
The Thoroughbred Times' site is clearly struggling with the increase in traffic, as is the Pennsylvania veterinary site. As of 12:45 p.m. ET, there was no update on the veterinary site.
