I just saw that trade reported on the Centre Ice game I'm watching (Washington V New Jersey come on you Caps )
I did a double take becasue ti seemed a pretty hefty price to pay.

Atlanta's got a #1 center for the playoffs, at least.
Overpayment is right, maybe Waddell has been talking to O'Connell

I've always felt Tkachuk was a better winger than a center.

    I'm really surprised by this:
With three days remaining before the NHL trade deadline, the Bruins ensured that Marco Sturm isn't going anywhere. Sturm signed a four-year extension yesterday, a deal worth $14 million ($3.5 million per season).
Sturm re-signs for four years, $14m - The Boston Globe

I thought he was gone for sure.

I think he's better as a winger, too, but anybody who can play center in Atlanta will get a shot at the top line.

I didn't think the B's wanted him anymore, he's been pretty bad compared to last year hasn't he?

    Seems like more overpayment, too.

Kind of upset about losing Rivet, but it had to be done...

    To San Jose:
    D Craig Rivet
    5th rounder in 2008

    To Montreal:
    D Josh Gorges
    1st rounder in 2007

    The return is great, though!

Getting a first round choice for Craig Rivet looks like a very good deal.

Actually, he's been pretty good, especially defensively. He's even seeing PK time due to injuries and Premeau leaving. His numbers might be down from last year, but that whole line has struggled. Boyes is way off last year's pace, and Bergeron has has been hot and cold and is just coming off an injury.

I figured he wanted out, just like Stuart, and would go to free agency instead of re-signing.

    Fair bit of movement today.
Georges Laraque and Gary Roberts both waive their NTC's to go to Pittsburgh.
Noah Welch goes to Florida, Danny Carcillo and an 3rd round pick in 2008 to Phoenix for Georges.

Marti Biron traded to Philly from Sabres.
    Sabres pick up Ty Conklin.
    This seems bizarre to me.
Conklin was not great for Edmonton coming in for Roloson last season in the playoffs.

    Guerin traded to San Jose.
TSN reports San Jose gave up their other first round pick (previously gave a first round pick to Montreal for Rivet) to land Guerin. Also threw in a prospect.

ETA: Brad May from Colorado to Anaheim.
Aaron Ward from Rangers to Boston for Paul Mara.

    Todd Bertuzzi to Detroit.
I don't care where he goes and I don't even care if he wins a Stanley cup every year for the remainder of his career, just get his miserable, negative presence away from Florida. (or more accurately away from JBo )

Ryan Smyth to New York Islanders

    NHL.com - Trade Deadline

Washington traded RW Dainius Zubrus and D Timo Helbling to Buffalo for C Jiri Novotny and a 2007 1st-round pick.

Phoenix traded RW Oleg Saprykin and a 2007 7th-round pick to Ottawa for a 2008 2nd-round pick.

I am extremely disappointed with Chiarelli today.

    Boyes for Wideman
    Mara for A. Ward

    Giving up on Boyes.
    Ward is older.

And WOW, I can't believe the Oilers traded Smyth.

Wow! That's huge news that Smyth was traded--and to the Islanders?

Ha! Yet another reason to hate Bertuzzi. And Detroit. He doesn't deserve going to a playoff-bound team.
