MINNEAPOLIS -- Vikings running back Onterrio Smith, who has a history of violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, was briefly detained by airport police last month after they found an elaborate kit used to beat drug tests.

Police at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport questioned Smith on April 21 after a search of his bag discovered vials of white powder, according to a police report.

Smith told officers it was dried urine used for making a clean urine test in conjunction with a device called "The Original Whizzinator." In addition, he had a bottle of pills labeled "cleansing formula."

Smith told police he was taking the vials to his cousin. The police report didn't say where Smith was traveling.

Vikings coach Mike Tice told the Star Tribune, which first reported the story Wednesday, that he didn't know about Smith being detained and had no comment.

On Wednesday, a Vikings spokesman had no comment. Smith's agent, Douglas Hendrickson, didn't immediately return a message left at his office.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said league rules state that failing to cooperate with a drug test was the same as failing it, but he wasn't sure whether there was any penalty for possessing a device designed to beat such a test.

Smith was suspended last season for four games after testing positive for marijuana. It was his second "strike" in the NFL's substance-abuse program. He would earn a yearlong suspension for a third violation.

The report filed April 26 says a tube of toothpaste set off an alarm as a bag Smith was carrying was being scanned. Six or seven vials of white powder were discovered in the bag. Smith was detained, questioned and allowed to leave, the report said.

In 2000, Smith was kicked out of Tennessee for using marijuana. He finished his college career at Oregon. Smith rushed for 579 yards as a rookie and led the Vikings last season with 544 yards.

    Two things.

One: I did n't know Minneapolis-St. Paul even had an international airport.

Two: Never knew there was such a thing has dried urine. All this time I've been urinating the old fashioned way.

This guy is going to smoke himself out of the league. What a waste of talent.

hey now, we've got a nifty airport here in MSP. In fact, there was a two plane collision on the tarmack last night where one plane taxied right into another one (both were on the ground). Yup, we've gots an airport. And pot smoking football players who have purchased a Whizzinator. I'm so very proud. *sniff*

Bill, I was going to post that story and you beat me to the punch! I had heard about a Whizzinator-type device before but wasn't sure if it was for real.

Here's the story from an email I received - it has a little more info. (Yes I'm a geek; I get year-round fantasy football updates.) Towards the end it says players have to take off their shirts and drop their pants to give their urine samples - with a guy watching them. So I'm not sure how wearing a jock strap with a plastic johnson and a bag of powdered urine is going to help.

I do encourage everyone to go to whizzinator.com for an educational experience. Note that the Whizzinator comes in white, tan, Latino, brown and black. Get yours now!!

PS - The testimonial page is pretty funny, too.

    BREAKING NEWS
    May 11, 2005
    ****************

** The Star Tribune reports Vikings RB Onterrio Smith
was detained last month at Minneapolis-St. Paul
Airport after police found paraphernalia that was identified
as a kit used to circumvent drug tests. Smith was
neither arrested nor charged with a crime -- but it’s
possible the incident will be another strike in the NFL's
substance-abuse program. Today’s Star Tribune report
says “Smith acknowledged to airport police that he was
carrying dried urine, along with a device called ‘The
Original Whizzinator’ and a bottle of pills labeled
‘Cleansing Formula.’ He told police the kit was ‘for
making a clean urine test’ and said he was taking the
    materials to his cousin.”

None of this is surprising to anyone associated with
Smith. University of Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer kicked
him off the football team in 2000 for marijuana use.
Onterrio transferred to Oregon, and while he was a
top-6 RB prospect on many draft boards, he slipped to the
fourth round because of character concerns. Last
season he was suspended four games for testing positive for
marijuana, which means it was really his second strike
in the confidential NFL drug program. A third strike
earns you a year-long suspension: This recent airport
incident with his “Whizzinator” could constitute an
actual attempt to substitute a urine specimen, which
qualifies as a positive test. The Star Tribune reports
neither Smith nor his agent have commented; Vikings coach
Mike Tice told reporters he had never heard anything
    about this incident.

According to Star Tribune report, Smith’s bag set off
airport security alarms on April 21st. The alarms
later were traced to a tube of toothpaste, but during the
search, a TSA officer found vials of white powder in a
clear bag. Airport police tested the powder but it
came up negative for cocaine -- Smith told police it was
dried urine. He also explained his “Whizzinator” to
    airport officials – a $1.50 device that includes a
prosthetic penis attached to a jockstrap and plastic bag,
designed for taking a urine test in front of an
observer. It releases water through the prosthetic to be
combined with urine powder to create a clean sample. The
instructions on the “Whizzinator” website say the user
should cough to hide the sound of the valve
unsnapping. NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello told reporters the NFL’s
testing guidelines include “having the player take his
shirt off and pull his pants down below his knees in
front of an observer” – so the actual effectiveness of
    the “Whizzinator” remains in question.

It’s safe to say that Smith is one of the riskiest
    picks ever in fantasy drafts.

our local radio morning talk show host- Dan Sileo, a former NFL lineman and admitted steroid user, was commenting on the dried urine. apparently the dried urine is from a pregnant female woman which has elevated hormones- which offsets (masks) steroid use when injected into the male. i'm paraphrasing- maybe even butchering his explanation... but the interesting item- more so then the whizzinator- is the dried urine...
