lets do the time warp again!!!!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!" -- Steve Parker

    Darlington Stripes

Several drivers earn their 'Stripes' in Happy Hour
Newman fast, Sadler, Kahne find wall in final Southern 500 practice

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- In the old days, the only way to get around Darlington Raceway was to use the outside wall to propel yourself down the front straightaway.

Yes, you'd drive deep in Turn 3, let the car drift up, then bounce off the wall to get a good shot off Turn 4. The roughed-up right side of the car was called it the "Darlington Stripe," and if you didn't get one, you weren't going fast enough.

Eventually, the Stripe went away -- or at least getting one on purpose did. During Saturday's Happy Hour, the Darlington Stripe came back. At least 10 cars scraped the wall of the treacherous 1.366-mile track, including Nextel Cup points leader Kurt Busch. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson, two of Busch's pursuers, also had minor damage after contact with the SAFER barrier in the corners.

"After a few laps, you take all good off the tire," Johnson said. "All of us being aggressive, we just ran out of space and ended up getting in the fence. For us, fortunately, we didn't hit it very hard. I know some guys had to backups.

"That's Darlington. It's showing its character again."

Three other drivers crashed, with Kasey Kahne spinning off Turn 4 and slamming into the inside wall, while Elliott Sadler and Ricky Rudd hit the wall in Turn 3.

Kahne said he would have to go to the rear of the field for Sunday's Southern 500, while the crews of Sadler and Rudd were working to change engines, which would allow them to maintain their spots in the starting lineup.

"I really don't know what happened," Sadler said. "The first car had been working great all day and I really wasn't up to speed yet. I just let the 18 car pass me, and when I went into Turn 3, it just didn't turn. It just kept straight, so either I was up just a little bit too high and (whether I) got in the gravel or what, I don't know.

"I saw some other guys have problems with that corner. I was behind Ricky Rudd right there at the end and he did the same thing. His car never turned, and it hit straight head on. I just don't know.

"I was really careful there at the end to try to stay below what I thought the trouble spot was, and I'm going to have to do that tomorrow. It's going to cause some interesting racing tomorrow if you're caught on the outside."

Kahne didn't get a Stripe, but the front of No. 9 Dodge still sustained heavy damage.

"I just got loose," Kahne said. "It was really, really loose. We tightened it up, and it was still loose. I just stayed out a little bit too long and ended up crashing. The car was really good, but it was just too loose.

"We'll be all right. We'll change the seat insert, seat belts, mirror, steering and motor. It'll be all right starting in the back. I don't mind that. I just wish I hadn't torn up that racecar."

Darlington is a tough enough track as it is, but add in the cool weather and the SAFER barrier, and the 1.366-mile "Lady in Black" gets tougher. Drivers are still getting used to the line around the track since the SAFER barrier took away almost three feet of the groove in the turns.

Johnson said that contributed to his trouble, as his line through Turns 3 and 4 were affected by the barrier.

The cooler weather, Johnson said, made for more grip on new tires, which made for more aggressive drivers Saturday.

Sunday, though, won't change much. Darlington will always be difficult, no matter how hot or cold.

"I don't think it matters what type of weather you gave at Darlington," Johnson said. "The track's so abrasive that it's going to chew up the tires and slow everybody down."

Only a few drivers escaped Darlington's wrath Saturday. One was Ryan Newman, whose best lap of 167.647 mph led Happy Hour. Johnson was second at 167.642, with Carl Edwards third at 167.208.

Fast laps don't mean much at Darlington, for the tires lose grip quickly and the speeds drop off. Cars that looked good on long runs were Johnson, Jamie McMurray and Mark Martin. Sadler and Kahne were also good on longer runs, but that was before their primary cars were damaged.

Busch, who starts from the pole after qualifying was rained out, had the 16th best lap, but he, too, was quick after the tires slowed down.

Some of the other drivers who scraped the wall were Matt Kenseth, Jeremy Mayfield, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Casey Mears and Bobby Hamilton Jr.

Hermie Sadler changed engines and will move to the rear of the field, but he was due to start 41st anyway.
