No. 4 Morgan-McClure team fires Jimmy Spencer after arrest
Charges involve interference with police officers serving warrant against driver's son
By JIM UTTER
Three days after his arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer, Jimmy Spencer was fired by the Morgan-McClure Motorsports team on Wednesday.
In a statement released Wednesday night, team owner Larry McClure thanked Spencer for his help in improving the performance of the team, which has struggled in recent seasons.
"While his part has been greatly appreciated by everyone here at Morgan-McClure Motorsports, it has been decided, by mutual agreement, that it would be beneficial to both the team and Jimmy to release him so that he may pursue other driving opportunities," McClure said.
The statement did not specifically address Spencer's arrest, but sources confirmed it played a role in the team's decision.
McClure did not become aware of Spencer's arrest until reporters sought comment from team representatives on Tuesday, sources said.
According to arrest records from the Cornelius, N.C., Police Department, Spencer interfered with officers Sunday evening while they attempted to serve a warrant on his son, James Johnathan Spencer Jr.
The older Spencer, 47, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer, both misdemeanors.
Police also served the warrant on Spencer's son, who was arrested on one misdemeanor charge of injury to personal property, relating to an Oct. 6 incident in Cornelius.
Spencer, 47, drove in Sunday's Subway 500 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway for Morgan-McClure. He finished 29th. He had been with the team since the race at Texas in April.
A replacement for Spencer is expected to be announced by Thursday.
