Cars of McMurray, Foyt impounded at BMS

McMurray powers backup to top-10 start

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Jamie McMurray's No. 42 Dodge was impounded Friday morning at Bristol Motor Speedway during pre-event inspection after failing the x-measurement, marking the third time in less than a year that NASCAR officials have impounded a Nextel Cup Series racecar for this infraction.

Larry Foyt's car was also found to be in violation. The roof on Foyt's No. 14 Dodge did not meet specifications.

The x-measurement runs from the corners of the rear decklid, across the rear window to the opposite corners of the roof, and is a way to determine the placement of the car's decklid in relation to the centerline of the chassis.

Forced to pull out his backup car, McMurray rebounded well to post the sixth best time in Bud Pole Qualifying.

"It's been a long day, but we came out of it in pretty good shape," McMurray said. "I think it helped that we were the last car to qualify. We even picked up a little bit on the second lap, so that's about all you can ask for out of a backup car."

"I'm not real sure what happened this morning, but Bristol isn't the type of track were you can gain an advantage like that."

Just as Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch before him, McMurray's car was impounded and will be shipped back to the NASCAR research and development center in Concord, N.C., where it will reside indefinitely.

Foyt's A.J. Foyt Racing team had to withdraw because his only backup car was set up for superspeedways and could not be used on the half-mile Bristol oval.

McMurray's team will not be allowed to take any parts or pieces from the primary car.

"This is an unfortunate situation that happened today at Bristol with the 42 car," team owner Chip Ganassi said. "This is a short track car from last season that we put a new body on during the offseason.

"This is an unfortunate situation that happened today at Bristol with the 42 car," team owner Chip Ganassi said. "This is a short track car from last season that we put a new body on during the offseason.

If there was an error made in the body shop on our part, we will get it rectified. We look forward to working closely with NASCAR to make sure this issue is resolved in a timely manner."

Stewart was the first victim last year at Texas. NASCAR kept his car for quite some time, and when it was returned, it was without the body.

Busch failed the measurement requirements at Homestead-Miami Speedway in last year's season finale, preventing him from making his Cup Series debut.

Stewart received no penalty for the infraction, but Busch was charged 25 owner points. NASCAR spokesman Mike Zizzo said any penalties forthcoming won't be announced until next week.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

well I got my picks down and ready to get my butt kicked again this week
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!" -- Steve Parker
