In the new system each skater gets a Technical score and a Program components score. This is the Wikipedia explanation of how the Technical score works (they do a better job than I can):

In the old system I tended to think that the artistic marks got a little too much weight, but I have the opposite opinion in the new system. It seems like some of the skaters are so focused on racking up points that they lose the artistry, but they tend to still be the ones who come out on top.

ETA - I really like Dick Button too!! I think he appreciates the artistry over some of the unattractive-but-highly-awarded technical aspects of a program.

i think that might be why things looked so anti -climatic (spl) these days with this sport. it used to be so beautiful to watch, now i feel it's just blah. Well that's my opinion.

I am a figure skater myself, and I also enjoy watching it on TV!!

Lysacek Withdraws From Worlds After Fall - AOL Sports

Thanks a bunch, prhoshay. I've managed to catch very little of figure skating this winter (and it's usually figure skating that helps me get through a long, cold winter,lol). I just happened to remember this morning that the Worlds should have been on by now and worried that I might have missed them.

the world 2008 competition began and the first upset the chinese zhang lost their title they rank 3rd.
the USA girls were horrible, after short they are 8,9, and 10th. no way they will medal, so far the worse showing in a long time

Can anyone give a Michele Kwan update? I'm pretty sure she is through with competitive skating. Who knows what??

what happened to Evan Lysacek did he not compete at worlds, was he injured?
