PITTSBURGH (AP)—Tommy Maddox will dress for the Steelers' home game against Cincinnati on Sunday, a week after a spinal cord injury against Tennessee.
Coach Bill Cowher said Maddox will be designated the third-string emergency backup. That means he can't play unless starter Kordell Stewart and backup Charlie Batch are both injured.
But even if that happens, Maddox won't play, Cowher said. Instead, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who played quarterback at Indiana, will be the emergency quarterback.
"It's part of his rehab - getting on the field, putting the pads on, putting the helmet on," Cowher said.
Doctors have said Maddox is completely recovered from his physical injuries, but may take awhile before he's mentally ready to play.
"It's fun to be back doing a little bit at a time," Maddox said. "Suiting up and going through all the normal things you go through in a week. I don't know if it's necessary, but it's important."
Maddox is expected to practice normally Monday and start against Jacksonville on Dec. 1.
