I don't think he'd adopt her and change her last name. I think that would absolutely break Rick and Linda's hearts. Ricky didn't abandon them for a new family. He died. As sad as divorce is, it is not as tragic as death. Of course Emily still loves Ricky. You don't stop loving someone just because they died.

He is her father's daughter. She should honor that forever. In 3 years it will be the 10 year mark of the plane crash. There will be a memorial event either at Hendrick Motorsports or Martinsville. No matter what else is going on in their lives, Ricki is Ricky's legacy.

Should she marry down the line there are a lot of reasons for a step dad to adopt. It is not about the inlaws hearts it is about legal security. I dont want to get into the details here.
