It's all math to me. It's easily front-loaded into the cash compensation he receives. He could have kept the cash for himself, of course, but it's not like he had to sell a bar to pay for it.

He chose a $90,000 ring - in all likelihood, the ring is compensation for advertizing for Neil Lane - at the very least he wouldn't pay retail.

I agree that it is about product placement and advertising and not being in advertising I have little (to no) understanding of it. BUT, I thought product placement was all about playing to the audience that sees it. Doubt seriously there are many that can afford a 90k bauble, that are watching and if, they can there is no point in marketing to that small an audience. Guess the Lane name and Kay Jewelers is the natural benefactor but it is not like they say, Hey, gals, if you love this little gem but don't have the $$ for it, why not visit Kay Jewelers for a cheap knockoff. I don't get it.
