Actually both things happened...

Ricky crashed at the Las Vegas racetrack that the group date was on. (this is why it was tacky of TPTB and emotional for Emily) This CAR crash ended his RACING career.

He became an owner of a Car Racing Team. On the way to a Race the plane crashed, there were no survivors. This PLANE crash ended his life.

I agree it was in poor taste to put her there but she signed up for this show just like the rest of the girls so she is no better to deal with what is given her to do than the rest. She also had the option of refusing.
