Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

I absolutely cannot watch this show unless it's recorded so we can fast forward through Mary's screaming. Unfortunately, I find myself hoping she doesn't like the performances just so she won't ice pick my ear drums. I hope the producers will say something to her!

Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

I really like Mary, she cracks me up with her screams and the hot tamale train!
She is so enthusiastic and her love of dancing shows, I guess that is what draws me to her.

I like Mary. She brings a joy that's so pure and funny to the show. Her screaming gets out of hand sometimes, but the bit with Nigel and the headphones was cute. She's a break from the stress.

Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

I love this show and I have mentioned this before but I must have my finger on the remote just in case Mary screams. There really is no reason for it and I wish she would just cut it out, I really don't think it would make much of a difference in the ratings if she did, it might actually improve them.
I just don't understand the need for it except that it is sort of her signature trademark on the show.

They need to set Mary's microphone to 1/2 the volume of the other judges. Her comments are good , but she is way to loud. I often hit the mute button when she is ranting.

Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

I love Mary.

I don't mind the screaming & "hot tamale train" thing so much as I'm just not amused by it anymore.

It's gotten old and needs to be cut waaaaaaaaay back, if not stopped altogether.

Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

Mary is on the cover of one of those supermarket mags (Star or something like that, can't remember) with the headline "How a little dance show gave me the courage to leave after 9 years of abuse." Very paraphrased, didn't get the chance to read anything other than the headline because the clerk was actually fast for a change (dang her) but it looked interesting. Talked about how her husband had done all sorts of very nasty things to her and how she never had the courage to leave him before she started the show.

Anyways, just giving everybody a heads up in case you guys want to check it out.

Re: Mary Murphy - Judge

Here's the article where Mary Murphy discusses her abuse

'So You Think You Can Dance' judge Mary Murphy reveals her 9-year history with domestic abuse

Quote:
"So You Think You Can Dance" judge Mary Murphy says she suffered horrible sexual, physical and emotional abuse during her nine-year marriage.

Her ex-husband repeatedly raped and beat her, the 51-year-old ballroom dancing champion tells US Weekly in this week's issue.

Murphy's ex-husband, whose name was withheld by Us Weekly, has called the claims "flat-out lies." She alleges that the first rape took place three months into their marriage.

"We'd had another jealous fight, screaming, crashing over furniture, and he said, 'I want to have sex,'" Murphy told the magazine. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me?! We're fighting here!'

"He said, 'You're my wife, and you'll do what I tell you," she continued. "I pulled out a kitchen knife and screamed, 'You're going to have to stab me, because I'm not having sex with you!' He knocked it out of my hands, held me down and raped me."

After the alleged incident, fights were frequently followed by rapes, Murphy told Us.

To try and make up for the attacks, he would give her presents like a dress, diamond bracelet or earrings, she says.

"In the first year or two, I'd fight back, but eventually, I'd just lie there," Murphy revealed. "Get it over with, I thought. It'll be quick anyway."

While she sported bruises and black eyes for years, she never went to the hospital or alerted police to the abuse.

"I didn't want anybody to know," Murphy said.

The TV show judge also says she was pregnant around 1982, but miscarried, which her allegedly abusive ex-husband blamed on her.

"My husband was disgusted, saying I murdered our baby, because I'd done some light dancing the night before," she said. "I was sinking deeper and deeper at that point, just reeling into despair."

She was finally pushed to the point of leaving him in 1985, when she found out her wealthy husband, whose family came from the Middle East, had proposed to another woman during a trip there.

Murphy used the money she had saved up from teaching dance to drive to San Diego. She phoned home and asked her husband for a divorce.

After meeting with him one more time to sign the papers, Murphy has never seen or heard from him again.
