Okay, I didn’t particularly like Brandon, never have. I do believe he’s a very good dancer, but he doesn’t really ‘wow’ me, and he’s always so…. deadpan, in his dances, and he’s not been as great in a few numbers, certainly nowhere near the level of praise I keep hearing him receive. I dunno, I just don’t get much, if any personality from him. But hearing the judges praise him as though he were a deity and the greatest thing since sliced bread, it’s really, seriously getting on my last nerve. I know this show’s pretty much the epitome of judges picking favorites, but it’s gotten ridiculous with Brandon, the guy can’t seem to do any wrong in their eyes, and he’s plain just not impressing me, especially with that Argentinian tango where he was mostly stiff and did next to nothing. Even more annoying is how people seem so tired of the pimping Kayla’s getting, and yet nobody minds the judges doing the same to Brandon, even more than they do it to her, in my opinion. I just really, really hope he doesn’t win, because it’s gotten to the point where I just can’t stand the guy nor the judges anymore.

That may be why Mia doesn't like him (altho she seems to favor other gay dancers). That being said, he is a joy to watch and definitely IMO one of the best,
I put some of this down to his age, he's only, what 18 or 19? I think he's learning on this show and is sounding less feminine to me lately.

    Now Kupuono OTH.....
I have to mute him every time.

Brandon makes Mia and Lil C look more like chumps every week.

I admit to not being a dance pro, but I think anyone who's watched enough seasons of DWTS knows a good ballroom routine when they see one.
That Argentine Tango last night was incredible, imo.

Personally, I love Brandon. I also loved William last year, and Danny before that, and Travis before that - (so at least I'm consistent!)

All of these guys have a foundation of classical training, and are extremely talented and expressive dancers. There is an emphasis in ballet training on balance, posture, and maintaining a "center" for perfect spins and turns. This gives these dancers a "regal" bearing - head held high; body in alignment.

In the last century, modern, then jazz dance broke free of those conventions. (Bob Fosse, for example, had his dancers hunch their shoulders and turn in their feet.) Folk and street dancing put even more distance between "popular" dance and the western classical tradition.

I think we are seeing something of a class war play out on SYTYCD, both in the choreographers and the audience. Some see the upright stoic posture of a classically tortured trained dancer and read that as "snob". As a matter of fact, that was Adam Shankman's exact word for Danny the first time he judged him. I think that is unfortunate, because as Brandon (and Danny and Travis and William) demonstrates, you can throw any style at these guys and they will absorb it quickly. (Remember Danny and Lacy's samba from Season 3 - "Hip-Hip Chin-Chin"? Hot!)

So far, Brandon has done a foxtrot, disco, and hip-hop. He has never yet had his own style, but he has been superlative in each venture. Can't we just leave the guy alone and let him dance?

What an excellent post. The thing about brandon (and the other dancers you mentioned) that is so impressive is that the audience easily forgets how freaking amazing he is:
he does a style outside of his own each week with few to no flaws. It is easy to just come to expect an amazing performance from him and forget how much talent this requires. Whereas, from week to week, we see people that can not transition to other styles and struggle with ballroom, hip-hop, etc... (like Phillip being amazing at hip-hop but pretty much *sad* at everything else).
It often surprises me how bad some of these dancers are in particular numbers, particularly the ballroom dances. But brandon, being the talented kid that he is, makes you forget that he is anything but a ballroom/hip-hop/jazz/ballet/contemporary specialist from week to week. That, for me, is simply incredible.

Ya know, in Brandon's case, I am not even sure his dancing ability is all 'hard work.' I have a feeling that many promising students could work very hard (maybe their entire lives) and still not be as good as this guy. Which, I guess, means he has been quite blessed in the talent department...and I, for one, am happy to have the opportunity to view such a rare find twice a week.

He's such a gifted dancer. But as amazing as he is, he has a problem with synchronization. Not a big one, but I seem to notice that he and his partner (whoever it may be) are sometimes a little off. For example, check out the disco with Janette and the popjazz piece he just did with Jeanine. Two great dances, love them both. But there are little moments here and there where the synchronization is off. It may be the partner's fault, but it has happened more than once with him, and with different partners.

But that's just one critique I have. Other than that small thing, he's a really good dancer.

Wondering why it is that when Neil did gymnastics in his solos, Nigel never had anything good to say, but when Brandon does it, it's great.

I'm not a Brandon fan either. I just don't get any "joy" from watching him.

On last night's pop jazz number, I agree that the sync was very sloppy. But if you go back to the rehearsal package - that is what the choreographer was going for. She was pushing them harder and harder for throwing every bit of personal emotion they could find into those moves. When you do that, you are sacrificing synchronicity for emotional power, Robots and Rockettes are perfectly synched. Laurie wanted the opposite of that, which is what I think they delivered.

I disagree, I think that the two of them were able to show their emotions while also being synchronized. The parts where they were dancing as one were WOW. Then there was always those small parts where the synchronization fell off, and it always distracted me. Laurieann should did push them though, and in the end, it paid off since I think they did meet the emotional level that they were supposed to, minus the un-snychronized parts.

Ok. I'm thinking Brandon or Kayla for the win. I love all four but, dang, these two are poetry in motion.

Think Brandon will win, Kayla comes in 2nd. I prefer Kayla, for me she's the best of the men and women.
