They should just stop mentioning the choreographer in the judging at all. The judging is about the contestant. And unless since they praise every single choreographer, every single time, it means nothing. If they reserved praise for the truly superlative performances, THEN it would mean something.
ITA! It's getting to be just meaningless babble.
And what was that whole pile of stupidity with Nigel and Mary on Weds? After Twitch and Katee's routine, I think? Could you quit the joking and maybe give a bit of CRITIQUE to the DANCERS??? I swear if Mary picks up knock, knock jokes as her new schtick I'm gonna ....
I agree with the majority of you.
We were talking about the judges this week in my house too. The general consensus here is that we don't need the judges to tell us about the entertainment value of the dance, whether the costuming was good or that they like the contestant, we can see and judge that stuff for ourselves and sometimes just get annoyed if we feel like they are trying to push someone on us. Costuming and cheoreography are not in the contestants control anyway...and the screaming..and Nigels leering...and the comments (and dancing/costuming) that border on stripping or soft core porn...strippers may be talented but that's not the talent we tune in to watch, there are plenty of places to see that if that's what we wanted.
We would like the judges to give us their "expert" opinions. I think that's mostly why they are there, supposedly.
We want them to point out things we might not understand, the good and the bad...sometimes we don't know why something looked right or didn't or how a dance is supposed to look, for example the extension was done too quickly or not held long enough or was done very well...this dance should not bounce, this dance needed more give in the knees....although a lot of ballroom dancers around this area think Mary is way behind in the ballroom world and needs to get updated, they mostly appreciate when she actually takes the time to judge and not scream and be a Mary caricature.
and please if you don't know anything about judging a style of dance just say so ! If you are going to have a new style of dance at least have someone on the panel that can explain and critic it validly so we know what we are looking for in the dance.
And while we're talking about judges, can we dispense with the esoteric comments about a dance's "organic" quality and the like? I mean, what the hell does that mean? If you're talking to your dance friends, that's one thing, but we are just the TV audience, and from my perspective, my five years of ballet when I was a kid didn't teach me anything about organic dance, etc. Some of the judges are just there to preen, imho.

I feel that they truly care for these kids and aren't out to steal the show with either rude or off-putting comments. Mia, on the other hand, is sometimes blatantly mean-spirited with some of her comments and just plain ugly. I love, love, LOVE some of her choreography, but there have been times this season where I wanted to bitch-slap the woman and send her off to the naughty corner.
I like lil c and all, but he tends to go all philosophical with his comments and there were a couple of times when I went "Huh?"" after listening to him critique a dancer with his run-on of 18-syllable words.
This is exactly how I feel.
I also really liked Shane Sparks & Dan.. to bad they aren't there this season. And I also thought that Tabitha and Napoleon did a good job as judges.
Nigel went on and on over the choreographer EVERY SINGLE DANCE last night. Good God, man ... say something when they are superlative, not every single time. When you say everyone in the world is great, the word loses it's meaning.
JUDGE THE FRIGGIN' DANCE! That's what we need you for. I'm not picking up a phone over a choreographer or your opinion of them. I'm picking up the phone for the best dancer ... and while I am fully capable of deciding which ones had the "enjoyment" factor ... we DO need help on the minutia of technique - give us that.
Just a general comment about last night's show... This is basically slamming the judges and not the dancers.
Everyone was complaining about the judges of SYTYCD "pimping" Will... well last night they were pimping everyone but Twitch and Courtney.
I feel that the judges were not at all without their favoritism when it came to their comments.
All of the dancers did really well... I truly enjoyed all of the numbers! The only dancer I felt maybe didn't have an outstanding performance was Twitch, but still he was really good. (and his solo was funny!)
But the dancer, in my opinion, that took the beating from the judges was Courtney! She was invisible to them. I thought both her and Mark were great in BOTH of their dances... and they only gave exclusive praise to Mark. I felt so sorry for Courtney... she just stood there smiling while they gave Mark "props". They said they both were great, but they never complimented Courtney exclusively?!
The same thing happend in their second dance... the only person that gave Courtney a compliment was Nigel... he said "Anything we throw at you, you can do" and then he promptly went back to complimenting Mark.
I think these judges should be objective every single time. They are professionals and should be able to do that. I wish I had watched it live last night because I would have voted like crazy!
Anyways, I just had to vent because I thought it wasn't fair.
oh my... I think I've said something like this to my friends and family a gazillion times. At our house we now fast forward through both mary and nigel because of mary's shrilling and nigel's weird, perveted comments (especially this season as nigel would not shut up about chelsie's legs and outfits). Too bad they can't be fired (as nigel is the producer). they are both worthless IMHO and I'd be happy to sign any petitions to notify/inform/remove, etc....
I thought Lil C was a very good judge, he just seems to be trying a bit too hard to 'elevate the vocabulary' if that's what you want too call it . Instead I just see it as using too many three syllable words when simpler ones would do--and yes, many times he's using the wrong term for what he's trying to describe. Now, obviously C is no dummy--but he needs to trim some of the fat from his speeches. He is too much in the habit of using eight words when three would do, so that the viewers might understandably might not even be sure of what his point is. It's a common problem, just a really distracting one for television.
I actually gained a lot of respect for Lil' C for his comments, his seriousness in trying to explain what he saw and his constructive criticism in trying to help the contestants.
As for Mary... I cringe now when she starts to do her review. When she talks rationally, she is very good. However there are way too many times she is "over the top" and just plain loud. It's annoying, plain and simple.
As for Nigel, he's the boss. Can do what he he wants LOL
