Tiny little Pauline Mata and tapper Peter Sabasino were sent home tonight, due to a combination of the quickstep curse, lackluster solos and what all three judges characters as a lack of "star moments" during their time on the show.
Judge Nigel Lythgoe told us that Pauline was selected to leave because, "I think we thought that Ellenore had the most fantastic tango [the other week]. And we love Karen. She’s got style that's outstanding and she was going nowhere tonight. So all you can do is weigh it up against those two."
As for the boys, Nigel told us that Peter became the odd man out because, "We think Ryan is a great partner, and Kevin is growing week on week." And of course, it doesn't hurt that well-muscled Ryan has that heartthrob potential. As judge Adam Shankman told us after the show, "Anyone who spends that much time with their shirt off is likely to get hearts throbbing."
As for the overall competition yesterday, Nigel told us that the bottom three couples would have been composed of different people had the judges had their druthers: "[Our bottom couples] would have included Nathan and Mollee. Not to get rid of them, but to give them the little smack on the back of the leg and say, 'You've got to wake up.' Nathan in particular, you’ve got to wake up."
The judges also confided concern that sexpot Karen Hauer might have some difficult connecting with the audience as the competition progresses. As Adam Shankman put it to us backstage, "I think that what Nigel said is pretty realistic—that Karen's confidence and sensuality may effect the younger voters. They may not vote for her, because she looks like the girl who's going to take all their boyfriends anyway."
