Yes, the second thing is one of my issues with it, I think. Tons of "you don't seem to understand what we're looking for", but really, what *are* they looking for? I would have infinitely preferred to see an established band on there, with songs from that band. I was excited by all the Van Halen rumors, that would have been more interesting than this. *shrug*
And that is the thing, what are they looking for? They all stated at the beginning of the show that they were out to break new ground & now they just rag everyone for not be hard rock enough. So where is the new ground they are going to break? They are between a hard rock & a mystery.

But they still have to pay for last years songs this year too. Royalties are not a one off thing. Every single time a song is performed royalties have to be paid. So saying that they bought them last year and are using them this year because they are already paid for is not correct.

I want some new songs too.

Ok, I had to go to the website to look up the names before I could comment on them. It seems the quality of the singers is much less this time around. I think last year's batch was MUCH better than what we are seeing right now.

I'm one of the few out here not feeling the Dilana love. Dh and I both thought her voice was horrible last night, especially in the beginning. That being said, I think her arrangement was quite interesting, and given the right voice it would have been fantastic.

At this point, Toby is my favorite. I thought he was great both weeks.

Zayra ... um, my feelings didn't change from last week. Her days are numbered, along with Phil, Dana, Chris, Jenny (she RUINED Tainted Love), Ryan and Magni. I don't think any of them have any chance of leading this group.

I liked Jill last week. This week ... not so much (ok, that's an understatement). I never saw the Courtney Love thing, but while watching her I told dh it felt like she was a poser, just trying to be somebody she wasn't. It was horrible. Hopefully she'll do better next week.

I thought Josh was ok, but I felt like he didn't really dig deep enough. Dh told me to listen with my eyes closed, and it was better that way.

I liked Storm better last week.

Didn't like Patrice, and I can't remember what she sang last week.

Lukas was ok, but I didn't like the song. His personality is a turnoff, and his eyeshadow is distracting.

It bothers me that they aren't really giving props to the House Band. Last year is seemed like they were praising them all the time, but I'm not really hearing much this time around. Those guys ROCK!

And Tommy Lee? He is a joke. Try to at least be lucid for the taping. What a waste of time.

The band did not get into any of the performances the way they did last week. As LAGuy said in his spoiler thread, Tommy Lee looked wasted; and, to me, the others looked depressed. I was surprised by Magni this week - a stronger performance, and Toby rocked. Hated that Jill wore a stage costume ala Courtney Love then denied it. My pick (see my avatar) is once again Dilana as the strongest performance. If her rendition of "Ring of Fire" hadn't made me shiver I would have changed her out - but she's still there. It's hard to pick the bottom three this week.

I think they're looking for a hard rock singer with some attitude that wouldn't be laughed off stage by fans or former bandmates.

And I'm sure the problem with Van Halen is that there's no way Eddie Van Halen is sober enough or coherent enough to sit there every week and comment on performances.

I think it could have been justified if her comment was in response to one of Tommy Lee's childish "panties" remarks, but it was directed at Gilby who had a legitimate point. As someone pointed out who watched the internet show of the house, Zarya's knowledge of rock music is downright embarrassing for someone participating in this show.

It's kind of funny that they play so much Nirvana when Tommy Lee represents the type of music Kurt Cobain tried to kill -- the macho, sexiest, only sing about sex and girls with big boobs.

Tommy Lee is an embarrassment. I do like Gilby and Jason seems okay too, but Tommy Lee is hard to take.

I agree with you on Dilana at least on this show. She ruined a great Johnny Cash song.
I didnt think anyone had a standout performance.
I think the judges comments are really harsh.
For me personally Im not enjoying this as much as last year.

(And yes, I prefer Johnny Cash and Social Distortion's versions). Let's see--who else. Dana? The girl who had on the leopard thing? Not a fan of her singing but I was trying to figure out what was going on with her face--she looked like the vampires in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
YES!!! Thank you!!! I couldn't put my finger on it last night, but that is exactly what Dana looked like last night! She looked much, much better the first week.

I think Supernova has already picked the winner. It's Dilana's competition to lose at this point. The band clearly loves her look, her performance style, her attitude and her voice (even though I am not really into her voice that much). She is perfect for a Tommy Lee band, maybe even more so than Vince Neil (the lead singer of Motley Crue).

I was really disappointed with Jill. Being from Long Island, I have seen her a few times with the cover band she's in, and also have heard recordings of her playing with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's West Coast tour. She has an amazing voice which is absolutely one of the top three in the competition. But on this show she has become an annoying screamer. Check out the shots of Jason whenever she screams. He looks like he's in pain! And to go up there and say that she wasn't impersonating Courtney Love was a dumb move, because it was obvious she was mimicing the crazy Hole vocalist.

I also do not get the love for Lukas. When he sings and I can understand what he's saying, then maybe I'll warm up to him. I love Josh's voice, but he's not right for this competition. When they do "Rockstar: Phish" then give him a call.

Magni and Toby I think were the best guys tonight and the only competition for the top ladies -- Dilana and Storm.

Let me expand that a bit further then. That was the simple reason...

You can't just use a song. You have to get "permission" to use a song, "then" pay royalties on it. Many artists will not give permission to have thier songs used by tv singer wannabe shows. It devalues their brand in some cases, or so they think.

By saying they used the songs last year, part of that is that they have already gotten permission to use these specific songs. Meaning it is that much easier to get permission to use them again. I'm guessing that they don't want the hassle of renegociating every single song. Hence, many of the songs will be the same.
