Richard Branson's "The Billionaire" takes off on FOX on 11/09

SIR RICHARD BRANSON'S ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME TAKES OFF WITH A SPECIAL TWO-HOUR SERIES PREMIERE OF "THE BILLIONAIRE: BRANSON'S QUEST FOR THE BEST" TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, ON FOX

Sir Richard Branson, the colorful founder and Chairman of the Virgin Group of Companies, will lead a group of young entrepreneurs on an epic journey around the world in the new unscripted drama THE BILLIONAIRE: BRANSON'S QUEST FOR THE BEST (working title). The series debuts with a special two-hour premiere Tuesday, November 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and will continue to air in its regular time period beginning Tuesday, November 16 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

A self-made billionaire known for risk-taking, both personally and professionally, Branson will whisk 16 of America's best and brightest on the adventure of a lifetime. They will jet to international destinations and relive some of his personal experiences, tackling the types of dilemmas that help shape future billionaires. If they make decisions that impress Branson, they will continue onward. If not, each week, one candidate will be left behind on the tarmac as the rest of the group jets off to the next adventure.

Branson, one of Britain's best-known entrepreneurs, combines his enthusiasm for running the Virgin Group of Companies with his love for high-risk, high-adventure, world record-breaking attempts.

After founding the hugely successful Virgin Records music label in the 1970s, Branson expanded the Virgin name into "Megastore" retailing, book and software publishing, film and video editing, clubs, travel, hotels, cinemas, financial services, telecommunications, and rail and air transportation.

In 1984 Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways and in the last two decades has grown the airline into Britain's second-largest carrier. To promote the Virgin Atlantic name, Branson became involved in a number of high-publicity, record-breaking attempts throughout the 1980s and '90s. In 1986, his boat Virgin Atlantic Challenger II crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the fastest-ever recorded time. A year later he flew the Virgin Atlantic Flyer balloon the largest ever built across the Atlantic.

In 1991 Branson's balloon crossed the Pacific from Japan to Canada, breaking all existing records, and he followed that with a number of attempts to circumnavigate the entire world. These were thwarted by bad weather and in 1999 a Swiss team became the first to complete the trip. In 2002 Steve Fossett (Branson's partner for the earlier Virgin Global Challenger balloon project and now the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer) became the first person to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe by balloon. Now the pair are reunited to attempt another great aviation first: a solo, non-stop flight around the world in less than 80 hours.

Branson received a knighthood for his services to entrepreneurship in 1999. He lives with his wife, Lady Joan Branson, and their two children, Holly and Sam, in London and Oxfordshire, UK.

THE BILLIONAIRE: BRANSON'S QUEST FOR THE BEST was created by Lori Levin-Hyams, Laura Fuest and Tod Dahlke. Jon Murray, Richard Branson, Lori Levin-Hyams, Kevin Lee, Laura Fuest and Tod Dahlke are Executive Producers.

I have always found Richard Branson intriguing. The dare devil like previews seem to indicate that the upcoming series will have more suspense and excitement than the current reality shows.

Last week, Japanese scientists explaced... placed explosive detonators at the bottom of Lake Loch Ness to blow Nessie out of the water. Branson vs. Trump
The big-haired billionaires are polar opposites.

Branson and Trump: Opposites attract to reality TV

Prime-time network TV programmers aren't known to be big students of philosophy. But when it comes to reality programs featuring big-haired billionaires, the honchos at NBC and Fox seem to be setting up a classic Hegelian dialectic. First came the thesis: Donald Trump. The made-in-America mogul with the starched suits and starched hair headlined last season's breakout show The Apprentice on NBC. In a few weeks comes the antithesis: Richard Branson. The shaggy, iconoclastic British magnate, whose entrepreneurial drive is matched seemingly only by a powerful death wish, will star in Fox's The Rebel Billionaire: Branson's Quest for the Best.

Richard Branson was on the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. The winner will receive one million dollars and become President at one of the Virgin companies.

A clip was shown of Richard Branson in a hot air balloon. He told one of the contestants to meet him on top of the hot air ballon for tea. Richard was shown sitting on top of the hot air ballon with the contestant climbing to the top.

Jimmy told Richard that he is crazy and wants to die. But I loved every minute of it.

    Billionaire's Branson: Trump Copycat?
    by Daniel R. Coleridge

Shortly after The Apprentice became an NBC hit excuse us, Donald, we mean the No. 1 show on Earth! other rich guys announced plans for reality-TV vehicles. Obnoxious Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban inflicted The Benefactor on ABC viewers this fall. Next up, Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson introduces his own vanity competition series, The Rebel Billionaire: Branson's Quest for the Best (starting Nov. 9 on Fox). For a mogul who guerilla-markets himself as an innovator, isn't he worried about looking like a mere imitator?

"It's a fair question," Branson tells TV Guide Online. "When you see our show, you'll see it's really nothing to do with Trump's show whatsoever."

Um, except that it's another famous zillionaire inviting people to compete for cash and a job on TV, we must point out. Even so, Branson refuses to concede that his series was at all spawned by Trump's Apprentice success.

"The principle similarity is that we're both reasonably successful businesspeople although [Trump's] business is buying property; ours is slightly more diverse," Branson sniffs. "The second similarity is that we do have teams [competing for a reward] but that's how reality TV seems to work. From there, there's almost nothing similar.

"Donald comes in at the beginning and end of his show, and doesn't participate in a major way," he continues. "I've lived and breathed the show. If I'm going to do something, I do it well. I've traveled to nine countries on four continents with these people and I've done all the challenges I've asked them to do. We had a real adventure of a lifetime together for eight weeks."

Branson also can't resist nitpicking Trump's signature catchphrase. "I certainly don't like the idea of humiliating people. His simple way of saying to somebody 'You're fired' is something I would never do in my business," he insists. "It certainly wouldn't reflect well on myself or the Virgin way of doing things. I don't think it's needed. I think you can have a really entertaining TV show without having to put people through that."

Speaking of linguistic issues, what's up with the show's bulky title, which didn't originally include the word Rebel? "[Fox reality exec] Mike Darnell actually said, 'I want the longest title because they're generally the best,'" Branson chuckles. "To be perfectly honest, I hated the word billionaire from Day 1. It's quite an American thing to lord wealth [over others]. In Britain, we feel slightly embarrassed about wealth. In the end, I accepted Rebel Billionaire because it was more in keeping with what Virgin stood for, and took the emphasis off the monetary aspect."

This sounds good. I enjoyed the Benefactor initially. That one fell apart but the idea intrigued me. And something on Tuesdays is fabulous!

I don't know how many more of these rich guy megalomaniac shows I can take. I like The Apprentic, but it seems like anyone who can afford it is buying airtime whether or not they've got the goods.

At least this sounds more adventurous than The Benefactor, with challenges that are hopefully more exciting than playing Jenga. :rolleyes

I don't watch "the Apprentice" but I might check this out...In my opinion Richard Branson does in fact "have the goods"; he's much more interesting than Donald Trump ever thought about being in my opinion. I love the way he's always cooking up some wild business scheme or going on an unbelievable adventure. (ok,I'll admit it; I have a crush on Richard Branson, even though I'm usually way turned off by the super rich! )
I have found the Truth and it doesn't make sense.
