You can pay them by yourself or have an escrow account through your monthly payment...but you are not exempt from those property taxes.

This is really not nice, but did anyone notice Tamra's mother? They quickly showed her in the kitchen with Tammy, Simon and more of the family. She looked like she's led a hard life. I wonder if Tamra's come from the "wrong side of the tracks" so to speak?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't she come from what is now the 909?

No, Tamra was from LA County. I think she said Glendora or Covina.

But you do have to have the income and good credit to buy one. Even with a large down payment, they still have property taxes and up keep.
If you only mortgage $500k (because you rolled in the profit from a previous home sale), you really don't have to have the income for a million dollar mortgage. Property taxes and insurance and all that jazz, sure. The point is that a million dollar home can be obtained a lot easier when you orignally bought into the market before the boom, at a much more reasonable price point. Or when you take out an interest only or negative amortization loan, as so many people apparently did.

Actually both. Tamra lived in Covina then moved to Glendora. I lived in Covina myself for 12 years of my childhood. It was pretty much a middle-class town, nothing fancy.
