Kimberly Goldson

All Stars 6 - Rookie

Brooklyn, NY
Project Runway Season 9 (4th Place)

Bring us up to speed! What have you been up to since your time on “Project Runway”?
Since my time on “Project Runway,” I have started a ready-to-wear contemporary womenswear brand, Kimberly Goldson, alongside my sister and business partner, Shelly Powell. Our brand has been featured in several mainstream magazines including ESSENCE and Teen Vogue. We have dressed high profile celebrities such as Tamar Braxton for the “Dancing with the Stars” Fall 2015 cast announcement and most recently Tiffany Haddish for her history-making moment hosting “Saturday Night Live.” Kimberly Goldson also has great brand collaborations inclusive of creating a custom wrap for Chevrolet for their 2015 Chevy Cruze.

What garment from your season of “Runway” do fans compliment you on the most to this day?
I get the most compliments on the look I created for the Nina Garcia challenge – which I won! It was a gold top that really stood out, and it was on taxi cabs all around NYC!

What do you think you are best remembered for from your season?
I think I’m best remembered for winning the “All About Nina” challenge, but I hope to be remembered for my point of view as a designer and my character throughout the competition.

What are your strengths as a designer at this point in your career? Any weaknesses you’re still working on?
My strengths as a designer are my use of structured silhouettes, vibrant hues and luxurious textiles. I draw inspiration from the dynamic cultures encountered during my international travels with a dash of #BrooklynGirlMagic from the flavor of my hometown. I’ve created a mix of those worlds for women who love opulence and dare to be fearless, vivacious and distinctive.

I’m still working on expanding our size ranges to include more body types. It’s important to KG that we create garments in which most women can feel comfortable and confident.

How has your design aesthetic changed since your time on the show, if at all?
Since my time on the show, my aesthetic has evolved into a more directional focus from where I began. I went into the show thinking that my strengths were special occasion party dresses. I made a pair of pants for the show’s audition and they became my “signature” piece instantly. Now I have a business that is primarily centered on great fitting pants and special suits in custom prints.

Who is your favorite fellow “Project Runway” designer from any season, including yours, and why?
I have so many favorite “Project Runway” designers as I am still a huge fan of the show. Viktor Luna is my favorite from my season. He is so immensely talented with creativity that is very high fashion and intentional.

What makes you all-star material?
I’m an all-star because I have used the platform given by “Project Runway” and worked tirelessly to create garments that women want to wear as a part of a brand that is revolutionizing the fashion industry (not my words, said it). I have a clear voice in fashion that is unlike any “all-star” before me and I think it should be heard.
