    Andrae Gonzalo - Season 2

    Age : 32
    Hometown: Los Angeles, CA.
    Education: Self taught

    From the official site:

Andrať Gonzalo believes that a love of fashion need not only be the sole propriety of the superficial and the dim. Born, reared, and educated in Los Angeles, California, Gonzalo attributes his philosophy of design to his city's weather patterns. He maintains that in Los Angeles, clothing speaks of the wearer's identity, never saying merely that "it's cold outside". His work revolves around an attempt to utilize the craft of sewing as both a method to create a garment and as a means for engaging in a dialog about the times in which we live. Clothes by Andrae Gonzalo attempt to go beyond being a "fabulous dress" or a "cute top that works well with jeans". Each garment is intended to function as a living communication device that has the power to spawn intriguing conversations, or simply just prepare you to meet your fashion arch-nemesis.

Each season's design process begins with a comment on the current events of the day. It ends as innovative sportswear, classically derived, but constructed through unconventional means and materials. Gonzalo utilizes sewing machines in much the same manner that the French haute couture uses the human hand. He frequently contrasts elements of poverty and luxury, as well as the vernacular of fashion history to comment upon life in Los Angeles, or the current state of American culture. Past collections have sprung from unusual places, with inspiration ranging from the US government's fashion restrictions during WWII, to the gay porn industry of he 1970's. Andreagonzalo Los Angeles, Gonzalo's label, debuted in the spring of 2003.

A collection based on "the gay porn industry of the 1970's"? WTH kind of collection is that?

That's hilarious. All I can come up with for the "gay porn of the 70's" would be Village People outfits? (the guy in leather, etc?) The accessory would have to be handlebar mustaches, I guess. I've never seen any gay porn, from the 70's or any other time....but I really would LOVE to see Andrae's past collections to see what the heck THAT is about

I especially loved THIS part of his bio...

Well now I have a new goal...to meet my fashion arch-nemesis.

I googled up his site here. It looks like the bio for Project Runway came from his site.

As for his designs? Yeah, he's a PR contestant all right. He'll fit right in with the saran wrap/odd materials challenges.

If you meet your fashion nemesis do you recognize each other instantly? Are you compelled to engage in battle on the spot?

I'm thinking Village People, but that's too obvious. Ditto on Tom of Finland. Honestly, I have no clue... maybe aviators, flannels, and tight jeans?

Er, he seems more than a little pretentious to me. Although I, like all fashionistas, have had more than one run-in with my fashion arch nemesis and am proud to say my record is 3 and 0.

I know others have commented on this but what the f@*k? What is that? Clone gear (levis, flannel shirts, white tees), Rough Trade (black leather chaps and biker boots) or Łber preppy (turquois polos and OP corduroy shorts)?

There are three stories for you! I think you've nailed each on the head. I wouldn't mind seeing the third category come back (mainly I'm thinking about those tight op shorts).
