Here is my own prediction (based on nothing but personal feelings) on what could happen...
If Fox is serious about airing the PIS special on July 5th, then that will be after all of its "summer" series have begun airing. Most will have at least 3 airings under their belt. By then, Fox will be able to tell if their new series are going to be successful enough to keep around or not. If any series doesn't pull in the ratings Fox was hoping for, then PIS could be substituted in its place. A prime target could be (ironically) Fridays at 8 p.m. where "Totally Outrageous Behavior" and "World's Craziest Videos" are scheduled to air.
If memory serves, Fox aired 3 episode before shelving PIS in the spring. That wouldn't leave but just about 3 episodes left, since most Fox reality hours only produce around 6 episodes. (Reality hit "Simple Life" only had 10 episodes, though it was only a half-hour.)
If Fox truly has had a larger response about the show's future than expected, that should tell the executives (namely, Gail Berman) that there is an audience out there for PIS.
While I would welcome the two-hour special over nothing, I'm sure fans would just as well have the series allowed to finish its run.
Hello loyal "Playing it Straight" aficionados...
Sharif has just written on his website (shariffans.com) that the show has not been utterly and completely cancelled...yet...and that they are looking for a timeslot in which to bring it back to television. This isn't definite that it will come back, but at least we have it from a reliable source with connections at Fox that the boys and Jackie aren't completely out to pasture yet! He recommends that we keep writing to Fox to show we are still out here waiting!
Hope this helps!

Fox probably regrets pulling PIS from their line-up. The network is likely already nostalgic for it's less-than-spectacular ratings. Compared to what back-to-back episodes of courtroom drama "The Jury" pulled in Friday 6/18, PIS looks like a monster hit.
Although those two episodes were reruns from episodes previously aired on Tuesdays, but the ratings for "Jury" were thisclose to being beaten by UPN's upteenth airing of the movie "Phantoms". The network placed fifth overall last Friday, behind even WB.
If someone at Fox, when pulling PIS, asked "how much lower can the ratings go?" just got the answer to that question last week.
This is not mentioned on the TV guide for my area for that date. :-(Originally Posted by davewfred
I'm sure it's posted here somewhere, but FOX has announced that they are not going to air anything regarding the finale episodes of PIS.
Yeah, right! Just like ABC "promised" to bring back "Karen Sisco" and re-launch it in a better time slot. The networks make all kinds of intentions. Given the less-than spectacular ratings for summer series "North Shore", "The Casino", "The Jury" and basically everything besides "Simple Life 2", Fox can easily change its mind (which it does frequently).Originally Posted by John
But then again, remember the second edition of "American Juniors" that Fox aired last fall? No, can't remember that? Oh, yeah that's right. The network said they would air it, but ended up not!
