Why I like This Show(aka Paradise High)

It’s hard to say why I like this show. It totally baffles me at times. Could just be that this show is so stupid it’s actually a parody of the reality show genre? While some reality shows out there look at themselves as some form of game, Paradise Hotel indirectly mocks the reality “game show” format, shooting out twists here and there in order to spice up things whenever drama is needed. The Producers of this show seem to realize that the whole purpose of these shows is to entertain us. At this point we are not 100% sure how the winning couples actually wins, or even what they win, yet we still watch.

Recently TV has shot out a bunch of high school oriented TV shows where it seems everything that could go wrong does go wrong. The melodrama in these shows gets so annoying you just start pulling your hair and say this can’t be that bad in the real world. That’s where Paradise Hotel steps in. Whether they intended it to be or not, this show captures the everyday joys of high school life such as drinking, bullying people around, dorks and toga parties

What is truly amazing is the cast of characters the producers choose. These people resemble people I knew, while growing up in an average size city in high school more then 90210 ever could (although it must be admitted that both shows used 20 something year old people to play the high school kids). Here is a quick recap of a list of our featured players:

    Amy – Head Cheerleader

The head cheerleader is insecure so she tries to associate herself with things she perceives as prestigious. Although she is not good looking as her other friends, the fact she is the top cheerleader makes her feel important. She will go after things she perceives as the best, such as the alpha male to try prove her status. Take her away from her little world of popular friends she will be lost.

Zack – “Self Proclaimed” Alpha Male

The Alpha male is the top dog. He is very insecure so he will always go around telling others why he is the best. He feels that he deserves the best so will always go out to try get what he perceives to be that. If somebody invades his territory he gets all riled up like a rooster in a cockfight. He is most likely to end up marrying the head cheerleader, move to a trailer park and be miserable with tons of kids because he doesn’t realize that there is a whole different world after high school.

    Alex – Party Boy

While he doesn’t go around telling everybody he is the leader like the Alpha Male, the Party Boy is the true leader. He is the life of the party and the first one to jump in the pool. Wherever this guy is you know something fun is bound to happen. Party Boy is most likely to move to the big city, get a good job or open a business once he leaves high school (and finish college).

    Beau – Follower

The follower is basically a happy guy go lucky fellow who is secure with himself. His claim to fame usually is something like he can drink the most or can do some stupid trick. He likes to party and have a good time and is loyal to his friends. The Follower is most likely will end up being happy with life and work in middle management.

    Scott – Middle Line Backer

A lot like the follower, he is secure with himself and goes with the flow. While he is not the big player on the football team he is associated with the cool kids because he does play. He doesn’t have a big head so he gets along with everybody and everybody likes him. Will most likely end up marrying a cheerleader, have 2.3 kids and a white picket fence around his house while working 9-5.

    Kristen – Party Girl

The party girl knows how to have fun and that is with a capital “F”. All the guys like her since she is easy……….to get along with that is. She is the most attractive female of her group and like the party boy she is just out for a good time. The Party Girl is most likely to end up a hairdresser after she gets married and be the town gossip.

    Toni – Tough Girl

The tough girl is not as attractive as her friends so she adopts this tough personality to hide her insecurities. She also adopts a motherly role for her friends to validate her being part of the group. All the guys like her because she is “one of the guys”. The tough girl will usually take up for her friends if she sees somebody do what she perceives is wrong to them. The Tough Girl ends up settling down with a guy who she can control or become an S&M dominatrix.

    Holly – Cheerleader

Part of the cheerleader squad but is comfortable enough that she doesn’t need to prove herself. A little ditzy but generally a nice person and easy to get along with. The Cheerleader will most likely find a guy she likes and go on to get married and live a happy life with the 2.3 kids.

    Charla – Outcast

Hates small town life and everything associated with it so she just sits and waits for High School to end. She realizes there is more to life then what the town has to offer. Doesn’t really associate with the cool kids because she see’s them as part of the mundane existence of small town life. The Outcast will also cling to anybody who doesn’t fit as well while she waits for her out to a more exiting world. The Outcast most likely end up in Los Angeles, get breast implants and start doing porn when she is done high school and appear on Jenny Jones in an episode of “I used to be a Geek now I am Sheik”.

Keith – New Kid In On The Block

The New Kid on the Block is someone who comes to the school after the in crowd has formed. While he has much the same qualities that the alpha male possesses, he might bring something different to the table since he is a little worldlier. He poses a threat the to the Alpha male so the Alpha male instantly doesn’t like him and tries to shun him out of his crowd. The NKOTB will attract the outcast who see’s him as something different then what the small town has to offer. The New Kid is most likely to leave the city after one year when his dad gets a promotion to move to another city.

    Tara – Good Time Girl

A lot like the party girl mentioned above but she really doesn’t get involved in the “clique”. She is just out for a good time and will make friends with anybody. In some ways she is a lot like the Outcast looking for her way out of the small town, but she will not let that dream stop her from having fun in the meantime. The Good Time Girl will most likely move to the big city and be successful because of her ability to adapt.

    Dave – Dork

The dork is basically a guy who is a little different but strives top be as cool as the cool “kids”. He will overcompensate for his dorkiness by being overly aggressive in other areas. Will try for school president so he has some claim to fame. Will always aim for girls who are out of reach hoping he hits a home run, but will only get to first base if Party Girl is drunk enough. People on the whole find him funny and let him tag along. The Dork will most likely to end up in a job in politics.

Add to the main cast such supporting characters as:

    Class Clown (Tom)
    Mr. Artsy (Matt)
Popular Girl at Other High School in for a Visit (Kavita)
Has to be a FBI Agent on a Drug Bust because although she is cool she seems older according to Party Boy (Melanie)
Most Likely to Own Her Own Massage Studio (Deseree)
Cousin From Out of Town (Anton)

So what is the whole point of this post you ask? Well although the game may suck, I sure as hell can’t wait for the class reunion tomorrow night at Paradise High.

    very insightful Charlafan!

Like you, I find this show reminisicent of high school as well. I think it also shows how high school sort of extends into real life. Could be due to the editing, but the characters not be more stereotypical. I guess that's why I watch it - satisfies my John Hughes movies craving from the 80s.

Good analysis! Only problem I see with it is that I doubt any of the outcast girls at my high school ever "cleaned up" as well as Charla ...

Yep, you're right about that. But my school wasn't known for having hot girls in the first place. Even our cheerleaders were known as "the Dog Pound" and instead of pep rallies we had "Pet Rallies". You think I'm exaggerating, but seriously, we had two cheerleaders that were cute (not hot), and everyone else was ugly.

Great post CharlaFan! You are pretty dead on with those stereotypes in my opinion.

I'm in an orchard, of course.

Let's just say that small private schools (in Alabama) are not known for hot girls.
