    King of the Nerds (TBS)

    King of the Nerds
    Returning January 23 at 9/8c

Hosted by Robert Carradine and Curtis Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds), King of the Nerds is the ultimate nerd-off in which 11 fierce competitors from across the nerd spectrum set out to win $100,000 and be crowned the greatest nerd of them all. King of the Nerds will take the glory of geekdom to a whole new level as the competitors live together in Nerdvana. Each week, they must face challenges that will test their intellect, ingenuity, skills and pop culture prowess. In each episode, the nerds will first compete as teams and then as individuals, facing challenges that range from live gaming to a dance-off to life-sized chess. One competitor will be eliminated each week until one nerd stands alone as the ultimate champion off all things nerdy.
    Season 3 starts tonight...

I watched the first season and then part of the second. My takeaway is that nerds can be elitist jerks just like everyone else. I found some of the contestants in season 1 so unlikeable that I could barely watch. It was not a "love to hate them" situation either. Many of them were just downright MEAN about other contestants. It's like the bullied turned into bullies. The contestants that I DID like seemed to be the ones who got picked off pretty quickly.

I'm taping tonight's premiere episode. I'll take a peek and see if it is tolerable.

Started watching and ran into annoying Colby, the Jeopardy Champion...well, one of them. Carrying on...

Okay, I'm going to enjoy this show. If you liked the Cosplay shows on Syfy or the medieval wedding, you may like this show. The jerkiest person is a female engineer who works for NASA. She is not a people person and doesn't hide it. The first to leave was a trivia writer on a trivia contest. Of course it concerned Anime and those characters, but...anyway his team lost the Rube Goldberg challenge and he had to answer trivia questions against a fellow team member. Both were dressed in cheap Godzilla costumes and if they got a question right, they could destroy a section of a small Tokyo build. It was silly, but I wish the other guy had lost. The other guy looks like a faun without the hooves.

It isn't a hero show, more like the nerds and beauties show without the hookups.

Ben is smart - the challenges are so diverse that the best strategy is to take down the people whose specialties haven't come into play yet, like that trivia guy on the heels of an engineering challenge. I hope the fat guy goes home next because he talked down to the girls for crying, they'd just been verbally slammed by the most elite person in the field of their hobby, give them a break.

I agree, happened to catch it Friday, some contestants are especially jerky this season.

Yeah, they're REALLY cranking up the social pariah factor this season. When Curtis comes out dressed with octopus tentacles, not one but TWO of them remark that they're reminded of pornographic anime. The context has nothing to do with anime, he just happens to have run-of-the-mill octopus tentacles.

But that is when they were assigned the Cosplay challenge and Anime is a part of that. I can see where they made the connection. I laughed when they announced the judges and I recognized the Queen of Cosplay even though I only watched a few episodes of the series when it was on SyFy.

YaYa Hahn is a pretty regular fixture on the show; she's made at least one appearance per season if I recall.

I guess you're right about the anime thing but I don't know why they felt the need to go all Avenue Q on national TV
