    Wizard Wars

I saw this advertised on the Syfy website about a week ago and just now got around to starting a thread for it. Sounds like it will be an interesting show!

Premieres Tuesday, August 19 at 10/9c.
    ***

    Wizard Wars

Penn & Teller headline this competition series, which takes viewers behind the scenes of magic by challenging a new team of magicians each week to create the most jaw-dropping illusions using an array of random objects and transforming them into eye-popping miracles. The winning team of challengers in the first round then take on the expert "home team" of world-renowned wizards: Two-time World Championship of Magic winner Gregory Wilson; Wynn Resort resident magician Shimshi; YouTube sensation Justin Flom, and internationally renowned mentalist Angela Funovits.

Justin Flom has been featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and regularly takes the stage at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood and on Disney cruise lines. He has performed in 26 countries and lectures at magic conventions throughout the world. His YouTube channel has received over five million views.

Angela Funovits has performed in Japan, Germany and France, and appeared on NBC's The Phenomenon. She specializes in mind-reading, mentalism and magic manipulation. As a doctor, Angela approaches magic and magic creation not as an art, but as a science.

Shimshi is currently the resident magician for Steve Wynn and the Wynn Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Having appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Regis and Kelly and Masters of Illusion, Shimshi is no stranger to television and is equally comfortable performing live. He's performed for many prestigious guests of Steve Wynn, such as Mark Zuckerberg and the Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Gregory Wilson is a two-time World Championship of Magic award-winner and probably best known for his best-selling instructional videos. In 1998, he earned the Most Creative Magician of the Year Award. He is an incredibly accomplished creator, teacher, lecturer and performer, having worked in 40 different countries and 1,000 different cities.

Judges on the show include the aforementioned Penn & Teller, Jason Latimer and Christen Gerhart.

I liked it alright. Won't be something I DVR but I did enjoy watching it. Just wish they had more magicians competing in every episode.

I watched the first episode - no big whoop. I'll be surprised if it gets picked up for a second season.

Thought the second show was better than the first. Third episode was fun too.

    Re: Wizard Wars

I liked this recent episode myself - the contestants deserved to beat the wizards in the final challenge. They had a funny concept and save the "magic moving of the game piece" trick I couldn't figure out how they did what they did. (I think it was that trick Penn called them out on, and admittedly it was deserving, but you could tell only in closeups or pretty close to the act).

The chair into paper was truly inspired, as was the switch from salt and pepper to the game pieces. Amazing sleight of hand on the switch of game pieces.

This show keeps getting better, but I have a feeling it may only be one season. Knowing Penn and Teller, they will work hard to try and keep it on at least one more season so these rookies can get TV exposure - some are amazing and should have that exposure (even if well-known they haven't had a whole lot). Still... ratings matter.

I find this show pure fun. And sometimes I figure out how they're doing it and sometimes I don't, and I'm OK with that. Because I'm not looking to become a magician but to be entertained...and it is, for me, seriously entertaining.

Would love to know how they did the paper chair thing. That was cool. Those guys were really good.

I once built a chair out of recycled corrugated cardboard for a product design course, so it's not as though it's impossible.

But they sat on it, and then it became paper?

BTW, has anyone seen Penn and Teller's "Fool Me"? We caught it by accident tonight...it's pretty good, too, if you like magic.
