Because the mom was so emphatic about how 'wilful' Courtney was as a young girl and a teenager, I get the feeling that she was more than just 'wilful' --- Courtney was probably one of these totally defiant, uncontrollable' - mind of her own' - completely out-of-control, rebellious, and disobedient kind of girls who would go totally berserk when someone dared to tell her what to do, and who was also hypersexualized and God knows what else --- and who was, basically, waaaay more than the mother could handle. So Doug, who was a calming, stablizing influence on Courtney, must have seemed like the answer to the mom's prayers, in that he, at least, kept her daughter safe and somewhat under control.
So I can see where Courtney's being with Doug could seem 'wrong' on so many levels, but in this particular case, it was probably Courtney's least harmful alternative. My guess is that without Doug (or someone like him) Courtney would probably have been headed for total disaster as an obnoxious, bitchy, drugged up prostitute, or an addict selling drugs to make a buck, or maybe she'd be doing porno flicks --- or whatever. At least, with Doug, she's got the chance of a much better life.
