I watched bits and pieces of last weeks episode. I grew up a few blocks from Arlington Park and found it pretty funny that the lady was afraid to walk through the parking lot. For those that dont know, Arlington Heights is one of the more affluent suburbs of Chicago. The reason that employee had to live a mile away is that median home prices in Arlington are close to 400k. The chances of a crime in that lot are SLIM to say the least.
I just feel good after watching this show. It may wear thin, but for now, I'm enjoying it.
As far as the midnight walk across the parking lot (Arlington Park), I wouldn't like doing it by myself either, regardless of the surrounding neighborhoods. I think it's a good thing that employees can have an escort if they want one. Although some of the fixes Bill made weren't big, but they will do a lot to boost employee morale. He seemed like a good guy to work for and very willing to listen.
Regardless of the nieghborhood....a woman walking alone, in a poorly lit lot, at midnight or later, is extremly vulnerable to a crime. An escort to her car is not hard to arrange and it's ridiculous that the COO had to go undercover to make that change. I don't care how affluent the neighborhood is, there is always a chance that something bad could happen at any time of day, and even more so in the circumstances that she was in.Quote:

You have to know the area. Other than being in a very nice neighborhood the parking lot she was in is also only a hundred yards or so from the Cook County Circuit court building which is patrolled by State Troopers 24/7. Its about the safest lot I can think of.
Also I should have said "an hour" away in my first post not "a mile". The fact that she lives in Chicago a city with a higher murder rate than Baghdad but she is afraid to walk across a parking lot in a rich suburb across the street from a court building is funny to me.
I don't know. I worked next door to our court house in a small town and always worried walking down the block and across the parking lot there. Not because people were frequently assaulted but because I'm a vigilant person. I choose to not be complacent and a victim.
I also work in an extremely rural area now and go out to the parking lot at night in a group. Again being safe and vigilant. Even at college where the lots were patrolled 24/7 by the police I went out in a group.
I don't blame the woman for wanting lights or an escort regardless of how affluent the hood is or what it is located by. It is just very basic safety stuff there.
I don't find it funny at all. She lives in a city with a high crime rate, so she is probably used to being careful and watching out for her own safety, and there is no reason to ever stop doing that, no matter where you happen to be. Also, who knows her background? She may have been a victim of crime in the past that affects how she perceives her situations and even the "safest lot" is still a vacant lot where anything can happen.Quote:

I think diminishing the idea that safety should be a concern is wrong. The security guards are there for a reason, if it was such a safe place, they wouldn't be needed either, if you follow the same logic.
did anyone watch the GSI one tonight? i would like to know how it ended - our craptacular cbs affiliate here in Myrtle beach - froze up on a commercial and never went back to the program - so i'd like to know what happened - to all of the people gary worked with - and wondering if the girl taking calls lost her job or not. any help would be appreciated - thanks
Let's see...the first woman who was showing him how to load the trucks was given a full time job with benefits, he gave the call center guy with the really calm demeanor $10,000 to put towards his wedding, the woman who packed the boxes got $5000 for her kids' football leagues, the black guy got $1000 to spend on his little girl for Christmas and was put in a management program to become a supervisor. As for the girl at the call center-once she realized who he was, she started spouting out a whole bunch of lines about how she wasn't usually that way and the call had actually really bothered her a lot after it was over and how anything she could do to make it better, she would. He verbally ripped her to shreds then ordered her into a retraining program. At the end of the show it said that while she had gone through retraining, she was no longer with the company. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether she quit or was fired.Quote:
