LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Cable's FX has scrapped its plan to produce the ambitious reality series "American Candidate," which aimed to chronicle grass-roots campaigns for the 2004 presidential election as mounted by candidates selected by the show's producers.

FX entertainment president Kevin Reilly praised the work series producer R.J. Cutler and his team had done during the project's nine months of development, but said it had become too elaborate and expensive. Cutler said he was in talks to move "Candidate" to another TV outlet in time for its planned fall premiere.
