Extreme Makeover-Episode Two, An Officer and a Gentlewoman

Extreme Makeover is show where America’s best surgeons, dentists, trainers and stylists do their magic and transform people’s lives in ways they could never imagine. Two lucky people will be offered every tool available to help them capture the image that will change their outlook on life.

Melissa Jones of Sacramento California gets the surprise of her life as Sissy Biggers encourages her to send in her RSVP to her class reunion since she will be getting an Extreme Makeover. She is a loving wife and devoted mother who works part time at a diner. She had very rough high school years. The nicest of the names she was called were Dumbo and Pinnochio. Her first boyfriend broke up with her to go out with her beautiful little sister. One classmate told her that she could never have her dream of being a model because there were no ugly models. She realizes that the past cannot be changed by having a makeover but that her life can be wonderful from this point on. She has a very good attitude about her life that she loves.

    Melissa Before

David Patteson of Farmville Virginia is a Master Sargent in the Virginia National Guard. He is an authority figure as the leading noncommissioned officer in his unit but feels that his military career has been hindered by his appearance. He was turned down for a recruiting position even though he was completely qualified and says that it is the only job that he has ever gone after and not gotten. David Suspects that his less than "golden boy" looks are the reason for that job getting away. He has been called a multitude of names including Turtle and Gomer Pyle throughout his life. His wife, Norma, even thought he was a little geeky when she first met him. When she looked beyond his glasses into his eyes she knew she had to have him. When Norma became pregnant with their son, David’s insecurities about his appearance surfaced in a powerful way. He was desperately hoping that their child would look like Norma and not like him. He never wanted his son to feel as bad as he does about his appearance. David wants his son to be proud of his father and not ashamed of the way he looks. Now that he is preparing to retire from the military he is looking forward to a new phase in his life. He wants to go into the rest of his life with confidence. When he hears that he is getting the makeover he is overwhelmed and unable to speak. His wife was so excited for him and is cheering him on every step of the way.

    David Before

David wants to get his nose done, his chin made larger and bags removed from under his eyes. He also wants to have his teeth whitened and the fat removed from under his chin.

Melissa wants to get a nose job, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She also wants her prominent ears pinned back.

Neither of our candidates has been to Hollywood and are treated to all the sights of the city.

David is the first to visit with plastic surgeon Garth Fisher. The doctor recommends certain procedures to optimize the desired result. David is really pleased with the doctor’s frankness willingness to hear the concerns he has. Dr. Fisher nailed it when he said that upon meeting David he looked exhausted and uninspired, sleepy and a little sad even though he knows that he did not really feel that way.

Next David is on to Dr. Dorfman’s office to deal with his discolored teeth. David has Tetracycline staining from an antibiotic that was commonly used when he was a child. It will take several procedures to whiten David’s teeth to perfection. He is pleased with the progress even after the first procedure.

At Dr. Fisher’s office Melissa lets him know what results she would like. He tells her of the risks and benefits of each procedure and what to expect for results. She is impressed with his bed-side-manner and moved by the possibilities.

David is going to build up his body with the help of Michael Thurmond who believes in working smart on your body instead of hard. Michael is looking forward to a ten to twenty pound difference on David and sculpting his body to a good result including building shoulders and a butt.

Ultimately Melissa will be getting a nose job, her ears pinned back a brow lift, breast implants, a tummy tuck and lasik eye surgery.

Melissa was rubbing her nose on the way to surgery and thinking this was it for her and nothing will be the same. Though she is nervous about the surgery she is more excited. The doctor goes over the procedures one more time before they start the surgeries. He is very optimistic about the total look. Once she is through the surgery she is ready for the road to recovery.

David will have a brow lift, a chin enlargement, nose job, eye lift, and the fat removed from under his chin. David was not nervous until the night before the surgery, but is very excited about the entire experience. The doctor walks David through last minute consultation and recovery before surgery begins. Once through the surgery David has a bad recovery experience. He is dreaming that someone is trying to steel his identity. Once he is reoriented he is fine.

At the aftercare facility the next day Dr. fisher evaluates Melissa then David’s progress and is pleased. A few days later they have each returned to their hotel.

A week after surgery David gets to see his face for the first time and the doctor is pleased with his strong jaw line. David is very satisfied with his appearance even with the residual swelling and bruising.

Melissa gets to see her face and ears for the first time as well as her breasts and her tummy. Her tummy was the thing she was most pleased with until she saw her nose and became overwhelmed at how good it looked. The doctor informed her that her nose would only get better over time. She just could not get over what a difference there was in her nose and felt the impact of how that would change her life. She even looked at her "old nose" in pictures compared to her new nose just to grasp the reality of it all.

Two weeks after surgery David is ready to begin his body sculpting to turn his body from the classic pear shape to what Michael calls the “hombre look” With wide shoulders and back with a trim waste. David is looking forward to reshaping his body with diet and exercise.

It is Melissa’s turn to brighten her smile at Dr. Dorfman’s office. She is amazed at how much of a difference it makes.

Next Melissa has lasik eye surgery and in three minutes per eye she is through the procedure with no problems. She should wake up the next morning and be able to see perfectly.

Back at Dr. Dorfman’s office David gets finishing touches on his teeth as layers of opaque material are applied to mask the stains. Layers of translucent porcelain are added to make a more natural result . David looks forward to smiling more often.

Melissa starts her training with Michael who teaches her how to lift her buns, tighten her thighs and waist through exercise and prescribes a particular diet to maximize her efforts.

After exercise they are each pampered with pedicures, manicures
And facials. Next they each meet with stylist Vincent Boucher. He saw Melissa in vibrant colors and a variety of styles. Vincent wanted to bring David into the new Millennium with a little more polish and fun. David was ready to play and try anything.

With stylist Corey Powell Melissa got a new hairstyle and color that she was more than ready to jump into. She was thrilled with the over all result.

Corey gave David’s hair some depth and shape with a wash and go do that suites his life.

Makeup artist Sharon Gualt wanted to focus on Melissa’s eyes and keep it simple and soft, though she went a little heavy on the dark eyeliner. She taught her how to enjoy her makeup through experimentation.

The new David and Melissa return to their respective homes to loved ones eager to see the results of six weeks worth of work.

David’s mother is hoping for no drastic changes because she wants to recognize her son. His brother is ready for a shock and his sister is just trying to picture his new look. David's wife is anticipating awesome results. When he walks in the room and steps into the spotlight the crowd cheers and he tears up. Everyone is pleased with the results and most of all David. He has lost ten pounds and gained a world of confidence. His wife put it best when she said, “Sometimes in life you have to do these things to sort-of help you complete yourself.” David feels that he can do anything that he ever wanted to do and even better now.

    David After

Melissa returns to Sacramento in a horse drawn carriage. Her husband is excited and ready to see his wife after their long separation. As she walks down the stairs in a stunning dress she glows. Her husband was shocked at her hair and bewitched by her eyes. Her young son had the strongest reaction of crying because he was so used to seeing her one way and was so excited and happy about the changes that were made. Melissa’s mother was very pleased with her daughter’s new look and anticipates the difference it will make in her life; especially at the class reunion.

    Melissa After

Melissa had her ears pinned back, a nose job, a brow lift, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She had lasik surgery, her teeth were whitened, her hair was colored blonde and cut. She went from a size ten to a size six with her fitness routine. From beginning to end it was a wonderful fairytale for her.

Both of this weeks Extreme Makeover’s were successful and equally remarkable. It is hard to believe that these are the same two people that we saw at the beginning of the show. What kind of transformation will we witness on next week’s show?

thanks for doing the before and afters side by side feifer.

    david looks great! very impressive.

I was really disappointed in the stylists for Melissa tho. In all the shots of her before her makeover (but post-surgery) she looked really cute. But in the 'after' photos her makeup looks harsh and that haircut! terrible. She looks like one of my daughter's barbie dolls after an encounter with the scissors.

    Ugh.

What I really want to see is "Extreme Makeover Revisited" -- I'd like for them to go back and interview these folks a year from now and see how their new looks have changed their lives.

Sibna, I agree with you that Melissa's look was too much. She needs to be glamerous, but not gooped up. She also has very strong features that would be best served with a whispy loose yet styled haircut. The boxiness/bluntness of her haircut along with the starkness of her new color was just to harsh. I would love to see some long layers with more honey or caramel tones added to her hair. I would love to see slighty shorter, wispier bangs so that her eyes are featured without the heavy eyeliner. She also needs a little more color on her lips, but not so much that it is overboard. The good thing is that all of these things are alterable. She is happy with the results of her surgery and can play with the rest.

I love your idea about revisiting the makeoverees. It would be great to see if they still love their results and how their noses really turned out after a year. It is amazing how long it takes for your nose to heal completely.

    Fiefer-- great recap!

I really enjoy this show and I hope it sticks around. In someways it feels the most real of all the reality shows.

I also didn't like Melissa's hair. She didn't need the heavy bang, because she had a nice forehead, and I thought they should have pulled the top back to show off her nice ears.

I was really surprised that no one suggested collagen. Fuller lips would really have rounded her face out. I would have liked to see what that would have looked like.

David looks amazing. I was so happy for both of them. This is really a feel good show.

Did you catch the preview for next week--that poor girl!! I hope they really help her.

I just wanted to say that I saw Melissa on a local radio show today that is televised. She looked great. Her bangs are not as heavy as they were in the extreme makeover show. She said she did Oprah and I believe she said it was going to air Wednesday or Thursday. She really looked nice without so much makeup and without all the bangs! And, she said she did have collagen.

Beauty is more than skin deep

Floopie, you did it again! A great job.

I didn't watch my tape until today and therefore did not feel qualified to comment until now.

It was a quite dramatic segment. What really touched me was David's wife's attitude. She was so loving and supportive right from the beginning. Whereas his other relatives were hoping that his makeover wouldn't be too extreme and that they would recognize him, she articulated how happy she was for him. When she saw him she made some very touching comments about David being "complete" now. She knew his heart as well as his mind, and that's true love.

Melissa's makeover was also impressive although I feel like the rest of you that she just looked overdone. She needs to be softened up. She has a sweet nature and it must have been difficult for her while she was growing up with a prettier younger sister. Where was that sister at Melissa's "debut?" I am glad to hear that her hair style has been made more flattering.

David's makeover was even more strking. However, I didn't buy his story about not being able to achieve much due to his looks. As far as I'm concerned, he was just an ordinary looking man, not really ugly. I still don't buy it, but I will admit that all the changes rendered him far more attractive than he once was.

These procedures are wildly expensive and I wonder what sort of compensation these surgeons and specialists get from the Network for their fantastic work.

CaliGirl, Some doctors give group discounts. They have botox and colagen parties. You get all of your friends together and go as a group to have it done. This gets many people in and out of the plastic surgeons office quickly and he/she is usually willing to give a discount for a group or a referal. I never would have believed this myself if I had not seen two seperate news magazine segments on this topic.

I am sure that all the extreme team members give great discounts to ABC for their business. They are getting what is essentially free advertisements to these doctors and stylists. Notice how much background information is ticked off at each introduction to a new team member. It is a micro-infomercial about the person's experience. How much would it cost to advertise in every market in America. It is well worth the time of each of these people to do a job for free or cost of supplies and staff.

Plus, the names and descriptions of each professional are listed in the ABC press releases as well.
