    Re: Dating in the Dark

I've never gotten what the BFD is about meeting someone on the patio and maybe going on a date with them, in the light, even if you "feel no connection" (so far). There's many a long-term couple who started out not only without that "connection," but even disliking each other. And if no connection develops after a date or two, where's the harm?

This is not The Bachelor(ette), where someone proposes marriage at the end of the show. (And even on that show, obviously, there's no requirement to go through with a marriage.)

Methinks perhaps a lot of this is staged for the benefit of the TV audience. Otherwise, in most case, it seems ridiculous for people to walk away without even being willing to spend a few hours in the company of someone new, especially if they had felt some connection before seeing what the person looked like.

I would add that the "seeing" segment is very distorted. It's one thing to catch a glimpse of someone -- one way -- with no interaction between the two of you. It's quite another to be in a room with that same person where you can both see and react to each other. The "seeing" portion is just a small step up from seeing a photo of someone. Not a good basis for figuring out whether there's a physical attraction or not.

Hardly anyone looks great when they see each other for the first time. Probably the harsh lighting, just not flattering.
