The very few people I've known whose families had money certainly didn't talk about it - for them money was like an old cardigan; comforting and always there when they needed it but not something you make a fuss about. These bourgeoise do more than notice each others' things, they exclaim on them in the loudest way possible. I think LuAnn's come closest to the kind of manners that may be truly impressive, as opposed to brash, except for the constant mentioning of the count.

The rest are succesful tradeswives of successful tradesmen, or desperate to be. There's nothing wrong with that of course, its not really how you make your millions but what you do with it that matters. Being rude to the servants is bad enough but doing it in front of others is...words fail me.

Mind you, if they trotted from charity tea to charity tea in tweeds in the country, I imagine that the show would be less interesting. Let's face it, Jill is entertaining, and she seems to really lover her daughter, Ramona's the kind of shop girl you can't help but like, and Bethenny probably cooks well. I feel really sorry for Alex and Simon, they are so utterly fake that they must hate themselves.

Don't forget, Simon's really an innkeeper, Jill a draper, LuAnn a clothier and Ramona a jeweller of some sort, and while innkeepers, drapers, clothiers, and jewel-makers may be pleasant, the people whose notice Alex, Simon, Jill, LuAnn and Ramona crave don't really socialise with them.

I like Mario best.

Re: Jason being fired, I would really like to see what terms his employment contract contained. But if there was no contract, New York is an employment-at-will state, which allows employees to be terminated for no reason at all.
So many unknown details.

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

So guess who I saw on the subway train the other day?! Alex McCord. We both got in the same car at 7th Ave (& 57th) on the downtown-bound W train. I actually only noticed her coat at first (which was fab) and she turned around enough that I caught her profile and I was like, it totally looks like Alex... once she sat down I got a frontal view and it was definitely her. She was alone and looking quite stylish. I didn't realize how lithe she is. No make up BUT! her hair didn't look fried! She must have just gotten her hair did. I had to get off just a couple stops down so I have no idea where she was headed. That's all I've got. I seem to only spot reality TV celebrities, not the real ones. :/

Too funny!

But if you scratch any fortune-you've got someone there, who did something either tradesmanny or illegal!
And I can think of many fortunes who fill both bills. (The Whitneys, the Astors, the Kennedys, the Rockefellers-the list goes on.)

BTW-I'm a jewelry-maker. I get fawned over because I'm the creative one.

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

A couple of thoughts - I went to Andover which is a prep school - I have never heard of anyone referring to it as a boarding school . And I didn't go there because my parents didn't have time - my IQ was off the charts and the school system in upscale Stepford, Mass couldn't keep up with my needs - it was my idea to go.

Now back up a few epis for me - BREAKDANCING? in 2008 seriously. Is it crunk maybe which is also passe but not as old as breakdancing. I remember that being hip around the time of earth shoes, toe socks and my 8 track tape player. RERUN was a breakdancer for Gods sake. Remember him from What's Happening? How does that have any application in fitting in at a modern party - she'd be better off getting him a naked twister coach to prepare him for college.

And I just adore Bethanny - I also spent my mid thirties fighting my biological clock with a corkscrew. And she tells it like it is - her identifying Simons "homo-panic" was right up there with Kim on the OC's glare vaporizing the car salesman after telling her the car would be good for her grandkids.

Also, tip to you who are curious about NY society and such tidbits. Pick up a Vanity Fair magazine - they always have articles on the celebs and social set of yore.

I do love watching Alex and Simon - my family was kind of Trumpish for where we came from and SO many people would just glom on. You learn at a young age to sniff it out. I preferred not to be a "connector" thank you very much.

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

Welcome Orchid.

I didn't think you were obnoxious.Snark is good.
You're right, those schools are just referred to by their names-Philips, Lawrencevile, Andover, etc.

But people can be coy with the seven sisters. I often hear "a woman's college' and then you have to press for which one! Then you get 'in Massachusetts'.
Then you have to press the subject again, for some reason. THEN you find out and I can never remember which it is that they went to.
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Vassar and Columbia get named.

Naked Twister? Too funny.

Uh, STEPFORD, Mass? As in the movie?

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

A lot like Stepford in the movie with some of Ang Lee's "Ice Storm" burg thrown in for good measure. White, Republican, overly manicured, homoginized community where everyone in town knew where the few token "Jewish" and "Democrat" families lived. Independent thinking was not encouraged - especially after the fallout of those crazy "key" parties in the 70s. Walk, talk, dress the same please - or leave. I did. They're very happy now.

Pretty much sums it up!

I just saw Bethanny with her mean catty pal having drinks. I don't approve of her going on and on about the aged eggs, having been there myself. But, to be technically accurate, whouldn't she have been warning Bethanny that her eggs would be too pickled. If they weren't at such a tony joint, she could have located on of those large jars or aforesaid picked eggs to point at as a visual aid.

Five minutes until the end of this episode. E-gad. What a sad bunch, these women. And Simon....there are no words.
