Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

I guess Alex and Simon haven't watched "Mommie Dearest"... "No more wire hangers."

I know when I spend over 5 figures on my new garments, I never allow wire hangers in the house.

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

Oooh - my first post here at FORT after being a LONG TIME lurker...

I love this show! So much more than the OC women!

Okay now to it - Simon and Alex. That couple makes me feel icky all over yet I can't get enough of them.

When they were "playing" with their kids on that futon bed. Egads - Alex can't act her way out of a paperbag let alone act like a Mom playing with her kids. It was all so foolish to look at.

And those poor kids...they will be bullied all throughout their school years.

And seriously - her hair. What is she thinking? And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't any place that is NOT Manhattan the suburbs? I mean Brooklyn is not the "city". It's a borough of New York but isn't Brooklyn a semi-suburb?

And I do not believe Simon is gay - he's just creepy. I have visions of him running on the beach in his thong and I want those visions GONE!

The Count is probably cheating on the Countess. I mean puhlease...he's never around always traveling on "business". Sorry, but I'm sure he's got a gal in every port.

And so is Ramona's husband. Mario is a class A cheater. Especially when that girl was flirting with him at the party. He probably started the flirting with her.

I like Jill and Bobby.

And good ol' BethN.E. She makes us 40 year olds look bad. She might as well break it off with cueball now, because he is not going to marry her.

And here's my question... what happens to her poor doggie every night she goes to the boyfriend's house to shack up? Does she take the dog with her to his house?

These people shouldn't have pets. Period.

Can't wait for the next episode!!

Welcome Maidstone,
It's nice to see another newbie who has all kinds of questions and thoughts.
Simon gives me the creeps too. Have a great time with this!

Is that the case? If so, it could explain some of the plainness of Alex and Simon's home. Again, Irecognize it was a fictional account, but even in the movie The Queen I remember being struck at how boring and plain Tony Blair's house was protrayed as being. (his family's private home - not 10 Downing Street). If they are trying to subscribe to that "we're so much cooler than most New Yorkers -- we're far more European" mindset, it would make sense that they'd take such an approach to decorating.

Additionally, they come across as a couple who are constantly trying to network -- not build friendships. So it would stand to reason that they don't entertain at home very often -- they're always out on the prowl for impressive people they need to latch on to. So if they've got limited financial resources compared to the lifestyle they're trying to project, then they'd use those funds on things that people would notice - clothing and entertainment - instead of a home that no one would ever see.

That is certainly true HOWEVER the impression more than paltry or unassuming on purpose is frankly that of closer to low middle class - even in Europe - My husband family owns a Summer home that we visit quite often - than to social climbing upper middle class as they pretend to be.

PS: At this juncture I must apologize for any past, present and future garrafal error as English is my third language and I am not too good at it.

Thanks

Re: The Real Housewives of New York City

I re-watched most of the episodes yesterday afternoon. And I want to know why Bethenny's hair is always greasy looking? I love Jill's hair. It is a beautiful color and always looks clean.

I also love Jill's hair! It just moves with her ,which is what long hair is supposed to do if it is clean. Bethenny is a mess. For a woman who is supposed to be the next Martha Stewart, she has a long way to go. I do not think she is 1/8 as talented and smart and resourceful as Ms Stewart. IF I were Bethenny, and I really, REALLY wanted a child but had no one who wanted to marry me,I would definitely hook up with artificial insemination. She has the money to support her and and baby, would have no ties, no committments,no husband/boyfriend to share the baby with- I would definitely go for it! GO FOR IT BETHENNY!

Either I read this, or a New Yorker friend told me, that some of the richest people in Manhattan and the Hamptons have the rattiest furniture. In "old money" circles apparently a threadbare heirloom antique is preferable to a new sectional from Levitz. (My friends would totally be like, "Get the couch with the built-in cupholders!")'

I don't know if Alex and Simon fit that profile, since their furniture looks like it was bought from IKEA. But I think in general that rich New Yorkers don't display wealth by "stuff" as much as rich Californians do. But they do flaunt their educations. The brief time I lived here I think was asked where I went to school more than the entire 10 years I lived in Oregon.
