I live 45minutes away as well and know people who simply started over in other cities because of good opportunities to do so. Others rebuilt but it took forever! Many are still working on their homes and staying in FEMA trailers in their yards. Insurance claims were denied because of flooding, there are not enough people to do all the work that needs to be done and new restrictions are requiring many to "raise" their homes several feet to be rebuilt and that is not covered by insurance. I have a relative in the St Charles area with a home on the National Historic registry. To keep the home in compliance, the roof has to be rebuilt exactly the same manner which cost them $150,000. Do you think insurance paid that? Nope. Anyway, it's rough for so many but it's coming back a little at a time. Go Matt. Just had to throw that in here! I can't listen to Jenn's voice so I will not watch if she wins.

| Re: Design Star You can thank "The Shrub" and Fema for the fact that after three years the city still has not been pulled together. (And that idiot mayor too!!!) |

I had forgotten about having to raise the houses for the new compliance codes. I posted that the majority of the working class and higher that left the city never went back and that is another reason its taking so long to rebuild. Plus the gang violence is out of control. Mexican gang moved in after the other gangs were forced to leave and now there are gang wars as the old gang tries to regain their footing. All that plus the insurance claims being denied adds together to a city that can't rebuild. I did find it interesting that a cop and a fire captain that lived across the street from each other didn't know each other? If Matt's sound clip about the show bringing neighbors together is to be believed. Now that's unusual. We tend to be overly friendly with out neighbors in deep Louisiana. Still don't know who I want to win, I honestly don't love either one of them. Jennifer paints too much and Matt is sort of all over the place.

Traditional kitchens are not that attractive, to me. I like them to look very different and more like a cool room than to see all those overheads. I don't find them interesting on design shows because you are very limited in what you can do so the end result is really more about the money spent on fancy cabinets and appliances than creativity.

| Re: Design Star I think my design dream do-over would be to have my seldom-used living room converted to a library with shelves built into the walls, and mostly leather furniture. Most of the people I know don't even use their living rooms, as such, with most visitors either being entertained at the kitchen table, or in the family room. I've usually seen living rooms as a waste of usable space, in most cases. The living room makeover could come right after the kitchen makeover!

| Re: Design Star I really like Jennifer, but I think Matt is the better choice. He is a great host. He works a room well, has good facial/hand expressions, explains things well. He seems like he's had some training in that area, if not, then he's a natural. His designs are a little minimalist for my taste, but he puts a lot of thought into WHY he designs things a certain way. Go MATT! And it was totally cool the way he let Jennifer have the guy friend (forgot his name) to help her with her kitchen. He was supporting her even though he's competing against her. |
