Famish televison stirs outrage

VIEWERS of Australia's Next Top Model are concerned the emaciated appearance of one of the contestants is sending the wrong message to the program's audience of young female fashion followers.

In a time when global fashion industries are moving to ban waif-like women from the catwalk, producers and judges of the Foxtel series are facing criticism for not enforcing stricter measures to curtail the seriously skinny situation.

At the crux of the concern is the painfully insecure contestant Alice Burdeu, a Victorian, 18, who is carrying just 58kg on her willowy 185cm frame.

One viewer, a mother of two teenage girls, said she felt "appalled" producers had not voted out Burdeu on the grounds that she was way too thin.

"She looks like she's been in a concentration camp and yet she's being presented as a role model to teenage girls," the woman, who did not want to be named, told Confidential yesterday.

"It's so irresponsible of the network and I can't believe they're getting away with it."

Online forums for the show have expressed similar concern with many saying Burdeu was way too thin.

Host Jodhi Meares has addressed the weighty issue with Burdeu several times, while a dietician has deemed Burdeu does not have a clinical eating disorder.

"Given this assessment, it was decided Alice should be allowed to stay in the competition on the proviso that she put on some weight," a spokeswoman from the show said yesterday.

"Alice has showed great commitment to putting on weight and becoming healthier since then."

But her efforts did not impress swimming champion Ian Thorpe, who appears as a guest star on the reality TV show next week.

The professional athlete was so disturbed by Burdeu's gaunt appearance that he pulled her aside to advise her of the importance of nutrition and healthy eating.

I feel so sorry for Alice gosh. Stupid mum and ian thorpe. Man how rude of him telling alice about healthy eating seems like he is assuming she has an eating disorder.

^That's so dumb I mean what about Jane she weighs 50kg and is 185cm so really they should worry about Jane not Alice or just leave both of them alone. Their is a thing such thing as being naturally skinny. Yes, stupid mum and Ian Thorpe.

It's so dumb, but for me Jane looks fatter than Alice, so Jane is pretty lucky. If Alice eliminate from the show and the reason is she's so skinny, I'll anti-AusNTM.... in....... um...... 1 hour!

I can't hate AusNTM because one of my favourite girls eliminate, AusNTM is fierce!

Yes i beleive jane has a lower BMI than alice. But yet all fingers point to Alice. Though Alice does look skinnier than her. Also jane's personality is more like open and not self concious, so she doesn't seem like anyone who would have an eating disorder. And Jane eats a lot of junk food but that's so unfair like soooo eating junk food and being really skinny is not bad as just being really skinny. But alice is trying to gain weight and the show just may not show it. Also i beleive she follows a vego diet so is must be hard to gain weight. Ausntm is getting angry comments about alice being on the shows and not being eliminated already. So that's why i beleive she won't win. The winner has to be a 'role model' translation a girl that isn't skinny. So they may swear as hell and be really whingey but they may still win. So i really feel for Alice this is not helping her self confidence with people talking about her weight.

This thing with Alice and her weight is sooo driving me nuts! I don't think she's too skinny in the first place! And now people are going to make a big deal out of it? Move on.

I agree. But just to point it out she is making an effort. In the insider's blog she says alice gain half an inch on her waist. Also in the blog "Probably the most scandalous event of the week was at Ruby Rabbit's 3rd Birthday party. All the girls were having fun dancing and chatting to the other guests, but for the most part they stuck together as a group. All except Jane - the only gay one in the house and she was supposedly caught by Steph H kissing a boy! Of course Jane was furious at Steph for spreading this rumor, but some good sources tell me it wasn't a rumor and the two were not holding back in a cosy corner of the nightclub." So is jane really a lesbian? haha

Thats a bit stupid about Alice being a bad role-model since Jodhi has said that she needs to gain weight and this should show viewers that shouldn't be that skinny but that dame needs to eat a frickin sandwich and she needs to stop complaining.

Regarding Alice being so thin.................Isn't been such skinny no longer a trend in Fashion industry after a few models died of eating disorder? I know Alice doesn't have any eating disorder problems, but she just looks so sick.............I mean, look at her bones!
