ABC has announced the popular “Dancing with the Stars” will be back for a second season.

The show, which featured celebrities paired with professional ballroom dancers in a weekly dance competition, will return in 2006 with new episodes.

In a press release announcing the show’s return, ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson said the show had “played a pivotal role in a great summer season” for the network, and that it is “tremendous fun.”

The show was modeled after a British show, and Wayne Garvie, head of BBC Entertainment Group, promised “even more tears, tantrums and tangos than ever before.”

He did not, alas, promise the return of the hilarious John O’Hurley. Nor did the release contain any information on which celebrities might be featured in the second season.

“Dancing with the Stars” proved to be a ratings boon to ABC, with viewership levels that made it the most-watched summer series since “Survivor” premiered in summer of 2000.
