Watchdog group slams 'soft porn' Paris Hilton TV ad

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A watchdog group known for its campaigns against on-air indecency is protesting a popular fast-food commercial featuring celebrity heiress Paris Hilton seductively sudsing both a car and herself.

The Parents Television Council said it is encouraging its more than 1 million members to voice their disapproval of the ad to Carl's Jr., a hamburger chain owned by Carpinteria, California-based CKE Restaurants Inc.

The Los Angeles-based group was also weighing whether to ask the Federal Communications Commission to declare the ad indecent, according to spokeswoman Melissa Caldwell.

"The ad crosses any sort of boundaries about what's appropriate for TV," Caldwell said, adding that the spot was "basically soft porn."

Carl's Jr. officials were not immediately available for comment.

The 30-second television spot shows hotel heiress and actress Hilton, clad in a skimpy black swimsuit, sudsing up and hosing down a Bentley. She also bites into a Carl's Jr. Spicy BBQ Burger before her two-word mantra, "That's hot," flashes across the screen.

The commercial, which began airing last week and will be used to promote CKE's Hardee's chain next month, has received a raft of media attention. A special Web site featuring a 60-second version of it (http://www.spicyparis.com) crashed for four hours last Friday as Internet surfers raced to catch a glimpse of the scantily clad socialite.

Neither Carl's Jr. nor Hilton are strangers to controversy. The burger chain in 1999 pulled a commercial off the air in part because of complaints that it depicted corrections officers and inmates in a negative light. It has also used Playboy founder Hugh Hefner in past ads.

Hilton, star of the Fox reality TV series "The Simple Life," became a household name after a homemade sex video of her with an ex-boyfriend spread rapidly via the Internet.

CKE Restaurants shares were down 35 cents, or 2.1 percent, at $16.33 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Wouldn't this thread have been more appropriate in the Current Events forum?

Paris was on the Simple Life, so I thought it would fall under Other Reality Shows.

Oh my gosh, I just watched it. Well, I can see why they are a bit peeved. I'd rather they go after violent commercials and shows, but it is a little racy. Paris looked pretty darn good, though.

I saw a clip of it on a TV show talking about the controversy. I must say I didn't see any french fries, and don't see how a half-naked Paris would make less-skinny me want a burger.

I just watched both the original version (not aired on tv) at the website Carls Jr. set up for it (www.spicyparis.com) and the aired version, and I must say I haven't laughed so hard at a commercial in ages! And they didn't even make it to be funny, that's one of the reasons it was so funny. I expected to be revolted, as I find Paris Hilton about the least sexy female celeb around now. But instead, I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.

For one thing.... Paris Hilton wouldn't know "hot" if it slammed her in the face. And when your face is full of plastic, knowing 'hot' would usually be something you need to know. Take note, Paris Hilton, LaToya, and Michael Jackson.

For another thing... Paris Hilton is such a bad actress she can't even fake how to wash a car -- or even how to hold the sponge. I'm sure the Hilton staff of chauffeurs are having a wonderful laugh right now.

For another thing... sexy comes from inside a person and just because you throw a one-piece skimpy bathing suit on a Made In Plasticville bleached blonde bimbo with a simple mind doesn't make it something sexy. Oh, she tries to be sexy, I'll give her that. But she just ends up making a bigger joke of herself than she already was. I love it when simple-minded celebs become an unwitting caricature of themselves. Her trying to 'act' sexy is so unintentionally funny, I recommend it to anyone needing a good laugh.

That commercial, although I know they intended it to be sexy, is one of the funniest things ever. And it only adds to the joke when you watch and listen to the spliced-in moments when she tries to explain why the burger is 'hot'.
I live in my own world. But it's ok, they know me there.

Wouldn't she have to be sexy before this ad could be classified as "soft core porn"?

I saw it, and it looked more like a Discovery channel documentary gone horribly wrong.

These "watchdog" groups are playing right into it. I'd never heard of Carl's Jr until this. They're giving it attention and making a big deal out of nothing.

Yeah, I don't want them being distracted by a not-sexy Paris Hilton, because I think they need to get back on the surveillance of that strange Burger King dude voyeur who shows up staring at people through their bedroom or kitchen windows and showing up in bed with unsuspecting homeowners.

Now that is creepy. We need every man, woman, jack of them on that case.
