EM:HE Preview 01/23: The Sears Family

In February 2004, Jhyrve was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Krabbe Disease, which is caused by an enzyme deficiency. Her only chance of survival was to receive a new treatment in which she'd be given a cord blood transplant at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina.

So in March 2004, Jhyrve relocated cross-country with her mother, Karen, to start treatment. After undergoing rounds of chemotherapy and then receiving her cord blood transplant, Jhyrve has spent the last several months recovering and rebuilding her immune system. Although the transplant was successful, the doctors at Duke would not let her go home to California until the mold infestation that threatened her weakened immune system had been removed from the home.

Jhyrve, 17, and her mom have been living in North Carolina, paying rent at an apartment close to the hospital while still paying mortgage on their unoccupied house in California. Karen had to leave her job as a teacher's aide to be with her sick daughter. The financial stress put on the family has left no money to fix up their home, while the emotional stress of not knowing when or even if they will return home continues to haunt them.

Meanwhile, near Oakland, California, Jhyrve's 14-year-old brother, Lucas Sears, missed his mother at his eighth grade graduation but understands that she must stay in North Carolina with his sister until the house is fixed. In the last year, Karen has spent a mere six weeks with her growing son. For Jhyrve too, the hardest part has been being away from her friends and her younger brother.

I'm confused. Is this topic for the Sears family? The family name and date on the topic now (01/16: The Grinnan Family) don't match the description--which I KNOW was for the Searses.

Gotta say... I never saw a contractor raise 100K for one of these families before. Usually if they do it, it's more like 10 or 15K. And what's the deal with Ty's rooms and those damned circles? I'm sure the "How They'd Do That" will no doubt talk about how... but I want to know WHY. It was ugly.

My mistake, the Grinnan's are next week. It should be the Sears 1/23. I will get a mod to update it.

This show needs to tone down the pity porn.

THE MOLD COULD KILL HER!! KILL HER!!!! SHE COULD DIE IF SHE MOVES BACK IN!! DIE!! SHE WILL DIE!!! *anvils dropping*

It was big time overkill with the choir, too. Sending her that video message was pretty damn mean. "Let's do something to make her cry for the people watching!!" Why?? Having them at the house when she got home would have been enough.

And I am so. damn. sick. of theme rooms. I hate to think what atrocity they'd come up with for my bedroom. Mr Ducky is a mining engineer, and I'm a chemical engineer. "Let's make their bed a dump truck, and turn distillation columns into lamps!" No thanks. If I got that airplane room with damn peanuts for my curtains, I would have been PEEVED. "Yeah, I like planes. Doesn't mean I want to LIVE IN ONE."

I think the circles on the walls was like water theme...cause it went through 2 rooms...both rooms which were for the girl to gain strength from...

that's what it looked like to me. The peanuts was a little over the top...that couldnt have been kept out.

Well even though that was a shack of a house to begin with, in the Oakland hills I can guarantee just the land was worth way over half a million dollars. I'm trying to figure out why she didn't just sell and rent a nice clean place or something? Of course, now its worth at least a mill with that house on it.

She was definately not in the scary part of Oakland, that's for sure.
They serenaded the newest champs in this city of champs, and taunted Kobe Bryant and his Lakers, who drowned in a green-and-white wave for 48 minutes.

Agreed. Just state it straight out and let us use our own compassion instead of shoveling it. Let Paul say something and I might believe it. But Ty just spreads it on so thick.

My theme room would be along the theme of "what won't look dated or I won't be sick of in 5 years, or won't be massively expensive to keep up when Ty and the others are long gone".

I agree about the theme rooms. If I ever went on a design show like this or Trading Spaces, I would tell them NO THEME! You get tired of themes quickly.

EM: HE-HTDT (whew what an acronym) seems a bit filler-ish this time around.

Ah... later on we DO get the Cadigan-Scotts at least.
